I was driving home about an hour ago and saw a lot of police cars/lights, etc on West Ave near Tops (only saw this from a distance). The corner of Chili/Thurston had several officers standing in the parking lot of the bank  and almost no citizens nearby. A number of people seemed to be leaving the immediate area.
Anyone know what happened??

I stopped and talked to a few police officers after the Tuesday night meditation at St. Stephen's on Chili. They were doing a sweep with focused police presence. Kind of a saturation night. I thanked them for being there and told them they could always park at St. Stephen's if needed.
thanks for the information.... I've never seen so FEW people on the corner of Thurston/Chili, nor have i seen that many police officers on that corner (with others near Tops). Thurston/Chili was practically empty but there seemed to be a lot of pedestrians walking away from the area (a little unusual for 9:15 pm in my experience). I hope that the nearby home invasion that occurred at 9:25 on Brown Street is not related to the 'sweep'.
I went to HSBC earlier, and there was a command truck there with three Tactical vehicles so they were targeting the area. They were there almost all day. (Thurston/Chili.) Finally we are getting some police support. There were also pairs of officers walking Thurston that I saw.
THanks for adding this information. It's great to hear/see that the police are putting some much needed energy and presence into our neighborhood. Here's hoping that it continues on an ongoing and very regular basis!! WOuld love to see some focused attention to the 'clubs' on Friday/Saturday evenings and parking tickets for the many illegally parked cars on Thurston. Things could change if criminals understand/realize that the police are regularly present here and care about what happens in our neighborhood.
Response from CPO Kristin Runyon to a question I sent her on this:

We are indeed targeting the area for the next month or so. The command van will be there as often as possible and there will be 2 sets of officers walking Chili Ave from 11 am to 11 pm.

On the 2nd, there was a secondary incident. Monroe County Sheriffs Deputies became involved with a foot chase of a Robbery suspect after they checked a nearby address. One suspect was arrested, one they lost. Myself and the Pac Tac walking saturation that night hoofed it all the way from the office to the area of that chase (Chili/ Hobart) to see if we could help out.

Thanks,

Kris

We ran into Lt. Leach (formerly of our NET office, now with the Tactical unit) at Boulders on Wednesday night. He says they will have foot patrols from time to time on Thurston Road as well.
