There are currently 147 jobs in Manufacturing in the Rochester Area
Ron Ricotta: We have jobs, but not enough workers
In a recent survey parents were asked if they would recommend manufacturing as a career to their children. Seventy percent said, “No.” This despite most believing a strong U.S. manufacturing base is vital to our economy and national security.
Would you be surprised to know that 600,000 jobs went unfilled last year in this industry that, by the way, pays 20 percent more than the average job in the U.S.?
Furthermore, there will be another 2.7 million jobs that need to be filled over next 10 years. In 1980, 20 percent of U.S. workers were in manufacturing, but in 2012 the figure has fallen to nine percent.
The parents’ response seems to reflect the prevailing national attitude about the desirability of a career in manufacturing, and most troubling seems to be reinforced through our educators.
The perception is manufacturing is dirty, dangerous and monotonous. Today’s manufacturing is clean, safe and intellectually challenging. It is brains, not brawn, that drives the industry. Today's manufacturing requires engineering, design, automation, computer, math, financial, and robotics skills just for starters.
At my company, Century Mold, we struggle to find qualified personnel. Our plants are throughout North America and we have the same issue regardless of the geographic area. Our dilemma is not unique to the industry.
Manufacturing needs students who have STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) skills. However, when you look at students in STEM college programs versus our foreign competitors, you get another troubling view of our national attitude.
The U.S. has 12 percent of its students in STEM programs, while countries like China and Korea have more than double this amount. To add insult to injury, more than a third of U.S. students are foreign born who after graduation, go back to their country and compete against us.
Manufacturing matters.
Every manufacturing job creates at least another four jobs, according to most expert opinions.
Manufacturing is important to our standard of living, unemployment issues, national defense and our American way of life. We should embrace this industry.
We should have, like many of our foreign competitors, a strong national policy regarding manufacturing.
Finally, and most importantly, we should be encouraging our brightest and best to consider manufacturing as a viable, and rewarding, career path.

Webster-based Calvary Automation Systems says it will create 100 jobs
Calvary Automation Systems - Mark Chaney, CEO. For 2011 Rochester Top 100. / unknown
Calvary Automation Systems, a manufacturer of special machinery and automated systems, plans to add up to 100 jobs over the next year as part of an expansion that included moving its headquarters to Webster.
Employees recently moved into a 370,000-square-foot location on Publishers Parkway, and the company is looking to hire engineers and technicians with the majority of the positions paying between $40,000 and $100,000, said Calvary President Mark Chaney.
“For (Calvary’s) demand to go up, the demand for their manufacturing customers has to go up more than the installed capacity,” Dewan said. “So it’s really speaking to the increase of consumer demand.”
But the company has also been marketing several of its own products in recent years, the most successful of which is a cooling system for data centers called OptiCool. Manufactured by a subsidiary under Calvary’s umbrella, the product is smaller and vastly more energy efficient than the air conditioning systems used in most data centers.
The demand for such a product is only likely to grow, said Dewan. “With the rise of cloud computing and so on, companies like Apple and Amazon and Google run these enormous data centers,” he said.
Calvary received $800,000 in state and Monroe County tax breaks as part of the move, said Jeff Leone, Calvary’s director of human resources. The company currently employs 220 people, almost all of whom are local. It also owns a facility in Penang, Malaysia, which is staffed by about a half dozen people.
Calvary is ramping up its operations in Malaysia as well, but plans to hire about four people locally for every one person overseas, said Chaney.
“We’re not outsourcing,” he said. “We’re actually adding more jobs here because of (the Malaysia facility), so it’s a clever partnership that needed to be done.”
The company, which has appeared six times in the Rochester Top 100 ranking of the region’s fastest-growing private companies, expects to reach $70 million in sales this year. In recent months, Calvary has invested approximately $20 million in equipment and facilities in Webster and Malaysia, Chaney said.
Webster Supervisor Ron Nesbitt said that the Publishers Parkway building, which formerly housed the Lawyers Cooperative complex, has been “on and off” of the tax rolls in recent years, and that Calvary’s arrival would provide a nice tax benefit to the Webster school district.
One of Calvary’s suppliers has also moved to Webster to be closer to the company, Nesbitt said. “For them to bring manufacturing to Webster, it’s something that’s been lacking for a long time.”
Calvary hopes to hire about 30 people in 2012, with the rest of the hires coming in early 2013, said Chaney.
The company will continue some business operations at its former headquarters on Hendrix Road in Henrietta.
