The Rochester Fire Department is now accepting applications for the Firefighter Entrance Exam, to be held on Jan. 21, 2012. The Application period is open from Oct. 31 through Dec. 12, 2011, and is open to city residents only. 
Firefighter Responsibilities
The Rochester Fire Department typically responds to fire alarms, rescue operations and emergency medical calls. A firefighter's responsibilities include:
  •  Locating the fire, sizing it up and relaying information to the officer-in-charge; 
  •  Making openings for ventilation, entry and search; 
  •  Evacuation and/or removing people from hazardous areas; 
  •  Raising, positioning and climbing ladders and entering burning buildings wearing heavy protective clothing with a breathing apparatus; 
  •  Laying, connecting, carrying, dragging and operating hose lines and nozzles; 
  •  Drive, ride or operate firefighting equipment, and placing various apparatus and equipment as necessary, inspect and maintain firefighting equipment; 
  •  Operate power tools, move heavy objects, dig and/or work in hazardous areas to rescue or extricate victims of various kinds of accidents; 
  •  Provide emergency medical treatment for injured and/or ill persons; 
  •  Conduct periodic inspection of buildings and private homes for fire hazards, inspect hydrants for proper operation and perform salvage operations at fire scenes such as, removing furniture, covering furniture with tarpaulins and cleaning debris.  
No experience is necessary, but the job of a firefighter is physically demanding. It requires a high level of cardiopulmonary endurance, muscular strength and muscular endurance. Successful candidates will be trained in all aspects of the job at the Firefighter Training Academy upon hire. Requirements
Candidates Must:
  • Be a resident of the city of Rochester at time of application and at the beginning of each subsequent step in the selection process up to and including the date of appointment. Claims of city residency are subject to review and verification;
  • Have a high school diploma/GED;
  • Be 18 years of age at time of hire;
  • Possess a valid New York State Class D Driver's license at time of appointment and throughout employment in the title;
  • Pass a general medical examination, vision and hearing examination, and drug test;
  • Be in good physical and psychological condition;
  • Possession of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT- BASIC) certificate issued by New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services within twelve (12) months of appointment.  This 
    certificate must be maintained throughout employment in this title. 
Firefighter Benefits:
  • Starting Salary: $37,812; increases to $66,031 in five years;

Scope of Examination:
The test process will consist of three parts: a reading test, a written multiple choice test and an oral exercise. Candidates who do not pass Part 1 will not be permitted to participate in Part 2; candidates who take Part 2 will be permitted to participate in Part 3. Parts 1 and 2 will be held on the same day; Part 3 will be scheduled at a later date and candidates will be notified.
The following is a description of the examination:
  • Part 1:  Reading Test – Candidates will read passages and respond to questions concerning the passage.
  • Part 2:  Written Multiple Choice Test – This test is designed to evaluate knowledge, skills, and/or abilities in the following areas: Memory, Spatial Orientation, Logic, and Work Behaviors. 
  • Part 3:  Oral Exercise – Candidates will be given hypothetical situations that will evaluate skills and abilities in:  Problem Identification and Analysis, Decision Making, Oral Communication, and Service Orientation. The Oral Exercise will be video taped. Candidates will also be video taped in their responses to follow up questions. 
Failure to appear at any scheduled portion of this examination will result in applicant's removal from further consideration in the examination process and removal from eligible list.
Medical Requirements:
The Rochester Fire Department refers to  NFPA 1582 Chapter 6 standards  (2007 Edition) on Medical Evaluation of Candidates as a guideline for medical fitness. Please be advised that this is used as a guide only. The City of Rochester reserves the right to modify these guidelines as appropriate.

Position 1:

Match Coordinator – Child Enrollment and Match Support for Monroe County

 

Essential functions:

Conduct child and family enrollments including orientation, parent/child interviews, and child safety education. Asses and refer families for alternative or additional services as needed.

 

Facilitate match meetings and continually assess the match relationship. Real and/or potential problems and barriers are identified, addressed and resolved as early as possible. Match support is provided on a frequency according to BBBS Standards, at a minimum.

 

Assess and provide for individual training needs, information and support needs for each match participant to assure a positive youth development experience for the child, and successful and satisfying experience for the volunteer.

 

Ensure high-level expertise in applying child safety and risk management knowledge, policies and procedures throughout all aspects of job function.  Develop strategic interventions to identify and strengthen match relationships that require extra support to continue to grow

 

Assist with the implementation of individual and group match activities to support ongoing volunteer involvement with the child and agency affiliation.

 

Recruit targeted youth through face to face activities in the community and by cultivating long term sustaining relationships with youth organizations.

 

To ensure quality services and measurable outcomes, maintain accurate and timely records for each match according to standards and utilize technology to report, synthesize and analyze data.

 

The functions of the position are to ensure that children are enrolled and matched while executing a high degree of independent judgment utilizing BBBS standards and practice and to provide match support to ensure child safety, positive impacts for youth, constructive and satisfying relationships between children and volunteers. A high level of customer service throughout all roles is imperative.   

 

Requirements:

Minimum Bachelors degree in social work  or related field preferred. Previous work experience in relationship development; interviewing and assessments; child and adult populations; understanding of child development and family dynamics.  Bilingual candidate is desired.  Must have car, valid driver’s license, and meet state required automobile insurance minimums. 

 

 

 

 

Position 2:

Match Coordinator – School Based Wayne and Ontario County

 

Work collaboratively with school personnel, community agencies and all related services to ensure project success and sufficient recruitment for program longevity. 

 

Conduct child and volunteer enrollment: including recruitment, interviews, character references, training, and dissemination of all policy information. Evaluate all participants for appropriateness to program.

 

Provide on-site supervision of match activities at school based programs in Wayne and Ontario Counties. Organize and plan weekly match activities including facility coordination.
