Youth Summer Employment Application: DUE Friday, 4/8
Fact Sheet: 2011_Fact_Sheet_and_FAQs.docx
Hello All,
The City of Rochester and RochesterWorks’ joint summer employment application is now available!! The entire process is online and all information that the students and families, will need is on our website. No paper applications will be accepted. High school youth may apply by accessing the application at the following websites:
www.cityofrochester.gov (Click ‘Jobs’ and ‘Summer of Opportunity’ then read the online instructions)
www.rochesterworks.org (Click ‘Youth’, and ‘Summer Employment Programs’, then read online instructions)
Application Deadline: Friday, April 8, 2011
Please log on to both websites so that you are familiar when you receive questions. Pay particular attention to the fact that the 14/15 year olds have a different process (w/NO PreScreening/Mock Interviews) from the 16 and over youth (w/NO Mandatory Parent Orientations). Additionally, keep in mind that each student will need to have their own email address when applying (appropriate links have been provided). For your convenience, I have attached the Fact Sheet and Frequently Asked Questions.
How Can We All Best Serve the Youth and Answer Questions?
1. Know the websites to refer youth to (everything they need is there).2. Seek the answers to the questions you are asked; the best way to serve is to be informed. 3. Tell youth that they must complete the online application and PRINT both ‘Next Step Pages’ (Computers are available at Schools, Public Libraries, Recreation Centers, Bureau of Youth Services/Employment Opportunities, and RochesterWorks)4. Remind them that completed all documentation must be returned to our office (City and RochesterWorks staff will be co-located at this address for the summer):
Bureau of Employment Opportunities
25 Franklin Street, 2nd Floor
Sibley Bldg., Suite B5
Rochester, NY 14604
Summer of Opportunity Mainline- 428-6366
5. Help to maintain the integrity of the process, by reminding youth and families that youth are competing for limited slots rather than being “placed”. 6. Encourage them to respond in a timely manner to all email, mail, and telephone calls.7. Advocate for summer employment. Encourage businesses that you patronize to hire youth!!
Reminder : Parents/Adults should not complete the application for youth; and please resist the urge complete ‘test’ applications as they show up in our system.
Thank you,
Carla Johnson, Manager
Department of Recreation and Youth Services

Abatement Job Fair 3/16 & 3/17
Abatement Job Fair Starts Tomorrow (Wed, Thurs, & Possibly Fri)
A Rochester company that offers training for environmental workers and a national labor firm are joining forces to recruit workers at a job fair this week for more than 100 positions in the environmental and general construction fields.
The fair is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and may continue for part of Friday at the Staybridge Suites Hotel, 1000 Genesee St. The fair is aimed at locating workers for contracts in the Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo and Corning areas. M&V Labor Resources has arranged the contracts and Cornerstore Training Institute provides training for the specialized positions, offering a discount to workers recruited through the job fair. The work of removing asbestos and lead, for instance, requires special certifications.“Although the unemployment rate is high in Rochester, it’s hard to find good qualified workers due to their lack of training,” said Jesus Mendez, president of M&V Labor Resources. Based in Orlando, Fla., the company also has an office on Humbolt Street in Rochester and has worked on a number of projects at Eastman Kodak Co. and Syracuse University. For more information about the job fair, visit www.mvlabor.com or call (407) 217-5989.
