Aw, nuts! I put out a cat trap because 2 male cats have shown up and have been loudly pursuing a rather ragged calico cat (who should have been spayed long ago) and (naturally) I caught HER, not one them. I can't afford to spay her, so I guess I have been engaging in wishful thinking that status quo would remain...sigh.

One of the pursuing males is in very rough shape and if I could at least catch him instead, sending him to the pound would be a kindness. The other one (a grey tabby), I don't know what to do...

Failing being able to get her fixed (she may already be pregnant...oh boy...) can someone temporarily keep her until I can catch the males? She is fairly friendly (she may not be feral, just neglected?). A little surprise - the kids just told me they think she belongs to someone on another street, but as I have seen plenty of other calicos around here, and Raeburn is very long, and we are on the Thurston end, I am skeptical.

I am just not in a position to either feed or adopt any cats. Feedback? Help? She will go to the pound (or Lollypop), otherwise, and I would hate to see her go. I will make an effort to talk to the purported owner on the next street, but what do I do if she is owned but they refuse to take responsibility?

You might contact Animal Service League, a "no-kill" group. They take in cats with the hope of adopting them out. Some of the members do foster cats. 585-342-6099 is their number, I believe.
Hi Marcy,

If you do find that someone claims the cat, before you turn her over, I'd really like to make every effort to get her spayed, both for her good and everyone else's. I'll be very happy to talk with the owner about this and help them make arrangements, which may not be as difficult or expensive as they think. But now while she's trapped seems like a golden opportunity.

I'm in touch with Habitat for Cats (234-2894, or habitat4cats@yahoo.com) about spay/neutering some feral cats (sounds like yours is not feral, so she will belong in a differnt program) and will talk with them about your situation as well, to see if they have any further suggestions.
if she is un-owned (or owner is not known), and is not about to be brought in as a pet, she qualifies for our program. $45.
she doesn't have to be feral!!

Hi again Marcy,

Judy called back, and though Habitat doesn't have spaces right now she did suggest two other possibilities:

Thanks Alice. We still have her and today hope to find out if she is owned when our kids' friend gets home from school and he can show us where the purported owner lives. She is actually pretty sweet. Call me - my number is 328-3141 (I'd say use the phone book, but they only listed one number - sigh...).
Well, she's not the lost Aberdeen cat, but thanks for the info. They came by to see but said it was not her. I let her go again because it looks like she's never had kittens, from what I can see, and she is an older cat, so I am hoping she is fixed already. I can probably catch her again if I need to, so I will try calling the other places. She is friendly, talkative and a great mouser, a nice combo if someone wants an outside cat, but our neighbor's dog would kill her if she accidentally got in their yard, so she needs another home.
Well, I gave them a call about having her fixed. Hard to say if she was ever fixed before, because I am cautious about picking her up even though she seems friendly enough. However, catching her again to be fixed should be a breeze - after living in the cat trap for 2+ days with food, water and a litter pan, shelter from the elements and no one hurting her, she decided this was easier than getting her own food and now every time we put out the trap she walks right in, has a bite to eat and something to drink and then goes to sleep until we release her again. Sharp cookie, but my goal is to catch those unhealthy-looking males and she never lets them near the trap!
Hi Marcy - Marian Boutet is holding a collection of three traps (I'm not sure whose they all are; at least one is hers) and has just finished getting 4 feral cats spayed/neutered. If you think having more traps might solve the problem of catching the males, I think she'd be willing to lend. The question would then be what to do with the unhealthy-looking males once you catch them. You said one you would probably just take to the pound as a kindness -- how about the other? Same? If you think both are ill and contagious, then the pound would be best. But if you think he's in shape to enjoy an altered life, I could see about setting up an appointment for the feral spay/neuter clinic we've been using. That costs $45. Would that be doable for you?
