The City doesn't anticipate having Voice of the Citizen (GIS) contracts in place until April (young people were looking to start in January). NE project is focused on crime and youth services. Looking at trends: What kinds of crimes are occurring around vacant buildings vs apartment buildings, vs single homes. Do some crimes happen around certain homes? Although existing youth programs will be explored to recruit young people, it is more likely that this project will serve mostly NE young people. Basically, this is a geographic crime analysis.
Some youth connected to After School program at School Without Walls where one of the students is plotting community service location. There is a "pocket" of youth at SOTA and School Without Walls; this may be a way of making a connection to SW youth.
Go to Joseph Becker’s Facebook page to see more information on interactive community engagement.
Tim Weider: Asset Mapping (house to house) vs Resource Mapping (agencies, businesses, etc.); some desired goals:
When someone sets out to create a collaboration, they should easily be able to determine via a digital map who the potential players are.
When someone needs a particular service (e.g., housing), we should be able to go to one website portal and "click on" housing and retrieve the variety of information around housing.
Want to see the "lines" that connect people and an identification of the What "criteria" that is represented by each of the lines. What is required?
Design of the architecture (RIT students?)
Collecting the info
Entering the data
In regards to the mapping resources that exist (e.g., youth in NE working on mapping) GIS needs a particular formula: Address, City, State & Zip Code
Internet Access
Sean posted some information on a contact he has regarding low-cost internet access. Robin highly recommends working with Cisco 1550 because of the support associated with it.
School/Community Connection
Suggestion: Work through after-school programming. Avoid the significant red tape involved in trying to accomplish school/community connection during the school day.
Robin talked about School #33 and his past involvement there to institute sustainable programming; a testament to that success is that the programming has continued to function well despite change in administration and without requiring his continued intervention.
NEXT MEETING: Monday, 2/10, 5:30 p.m. (2nd Monday of the month)
