I attended a meeting this morning titled "Exploring Local Initiatives & Programs" regarding online resource.  Two resources that were reviewed were 2-1-1 and  ACT Rochester and I had a chance to give a quick run-through of what Location19 is trying to do.  Representatives of several other programs with online resources were also there and several presentations had been done at a prior meeting I was not able to attend.  The objective of the meetings is to make the various online resources better connected with one another and with the public that can make use of them.

2-1-1 as the name implies can be reached by phone at 211 to get help on referrals for emergency food, shelter, clothing, crisis counseling, substance abuse issues, employment, financial and legal issues, physical and mental health needs, and more.  They also have an extensive website with information about all the agencies they deal with to connect people in need with services they would benefit from.

ACT Rochester functions as:
    • a trusted data provider
    • a neutral convener 
    • an advocate for change

"ACTRochester.org includes a wide-array of over 180 community indicators. Community indicators measure the overall health of a community when they are viewed together and are a key ingredient to systemic change.  ACT Rochester also  interprets this information through trend summaries, charts and graphs. Current efforts to advance our region as well as links to more than 300 local community resources can be found for each of the twelve quality of life categories. "     This looks like a great resource for grantwriters.

Thank you John for attending this meeting, and thanks to both John and Eleanor for your efforts to gather information on resources for the SW.

 

I perused the ACTRochester site, and it looks like a great resource.  I was hoping for more information on their web site, but we may be able to get more information if we dig a little deeper.

 

As the new president of the 19thWCA, I am very interested in finding out what resources the association and our residents have available to them.  If anyone knows of any grants that are available (for neighborhood issues such as housing, public safety and education) that we are not already utilizing, please let me know.

The Community Foundation has a civic engagement/social capital grant opportunity with a February 18th deadline - it looks like a good opportunity to create something NEW in our community. Public safety, zoning issues are some of the examples that they give in terms of a possible focus for the grant.

I am am responding to tHE Act Rochester reference as a good tool for grantwriters, not really, unless the organization writing the grant serves multiple counties....the data is aggregated for several counties, thus it greatly distorts/makes invisible the issues for the poor and people of color living in the city; and in fact, any city social issues.

I asked John Boutet to bring this resource up at Thursday's SWCC meeting.  I noted that the information on tourism fits nicely with planning for the riverfront; increasing the dollars spent in the area is a very realistic vision when you consider the wealth of history that this City, especially the SouthWest, represents.  John Curran's work to integrate a "history lesson" into May 1st's Crop Walk continues to promote the rich history in our back- and front yards.  Thanks for being a reminder not to lose track of inner city issues.

Thanks for your comment Eleanor, I have spoken with Act Rochester and CGR about the design of ACT Rochester and how damaging I think leaving out Rochester data is, and how is does a disservice to our efforts to get grants without good, timely data.....I think they don't want the city data on a website for fear it will be too damaging to biz, etc.
