Profile Information

Do you live in Rochester's SouthWest Quadrant?
No(t yet)
Do you plan on staying there?
Once I get there, yes
Tell us about yourself:
I am the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at the University of Rochester. Since I arrived here in 2003 I have been pushing and advocating for more involvement across the river--both ways. I have been able to launch several scholarships and initiatives for children in city schools to be on campus, lead my staff and students in rethinking their connections across the river, and advocate for more attractions for UR students, faculty and staff in the 19th Ward such as the Riverview Apartments.

This isn't new for me. From 1985 - 2003 I was part of careful, thoughtful dialogues between my former employer, USC, and neighborhood partners in South Central Los Angeles. Those dialogues over time have led to uncountable benefits for both "town" and "gown." I am hoping we can create similar models and dialogues here, and I'd like to be part of it professionally.

Personally, I haven't purchased property in Monroe County yet, but I'm looking to do so soon, and when I do, I want it to be on the west side of the Genesee near campus, as part of a vital, diverse and interesting neighborhood. I hope you will allow me to get involved in this forum ahead of time, so that I can learn from both a personal and professional standpoint how to be a good neighbor..

Hi Jonathan,

It has been quite a while since Shawn welcomed you to Location19.  I hope you have moved into the SW Quadrant and are still at the U of R.  I encourage you to participate in this site and am sending you the information that now gets sent out to new members.

Check out A Brief Overview on Location19 Structure to get familiar with what's where.  In the tabs, Be sure to check out the "All Groups - Icons" sub-tab.  We are currently up to 65 groups.

To join a group such as SW Education Forum, click on the group, then in the upper right of the group page just under the banner picture, next to your name click on +Join SW Education Forum and you are a member!  Being a group member lets you post to the group and also permits you to receive email notifications from that group about events and other info that may not be posted on Location19 itself.   I look forward to you contributions to the postings in this group.

There is a ton of information you can search for and read through on Location19.  Be sure you make use of the search options.  Also check out the Block Clubs tab.  In it is Block Clubs-4-22-2013.doc list which shows clubs we know about in the area.  We still need one on the East block of Melrose, if you would like to get involved in that.

Please post your picture.  Step by step instructions can be found here How to Post Your Picture - It's easy!

It' a good idea to subscribe to the Daily Email Digest so you receive an update of new activity on the site even if you don't check Location19 every day.  You can also find a list of new information posted by looking at the Latest Activity column on the Main page.

I look forward to your participation. If you have any questions don't hesitate to call Marian or me at 328-4271.

John

If you need any help finding a place to call home here in the Ward, feel free to drop me a line, and even post something in the forums. That's what were here for!

Thanks again,
-Shawn
