Next meeting December 22 in the Bird and Butterfly Park around the Holiday
Tree, 6-7 pm
We met with Officers Carl and Andy. They reported no major incidents but
there have been on the SW side 19 burglaries this month which is pretty
classic for the holiday time. Please be alert and report anything
suspicious to the police.
301 Wellington has been boarded up because the
previous tenants have damaged the apartments inside (10 apartments). The
landlord lives in Israel but the new manager, Carl Justice, seems to want
to work to improve the space and is working with our CPOs to keep tenants
from moving back in. Susan has been in touch with him and encouraged him
to bring it up to code and have it become Section 8 housing-not sure if
they have the money to do that. Neighbors have seen people coming out of
the boarded up building from a back high window early in the morning. Our
CPOs have checked on that.
The Rochester Fire Department joined us for our meeting and reminded us to
keep the fire hydrants clear this winter. They also said liquid heaters
are not allowed in the city (kerosene or gas heaters). If you are using a
space heater be sure it has a sticker with UL on it. These are safe to run
even at night while sleeping. Please do not heat by turning on your stove
or oven.
Huge thank yous to Jasper and crew for cleaning up the leaves in the
garden and for the crew that helped put the garden beds to sleep for
winter. We are also thankful to DES for the repair to the front sidewalk
and tree belt between Rugby and Warwick on Arnett.
Financial report: As you know, the Arnett Block Association is given $1000
from the His Branches fund raiser dinner in the spring. Some of this money
is used for bike inner tubes, helmets, Block party horses, entertainers
and prizes. In addition, we donated this year some jackets, mittens and
hats to School #29 as well as some craft supplies for making ornaments for
the Holiday Tree in the park. Some of the money also paid for the water
bill for the garden. We also have helped out neighbors who are in need of
temporary assistance.
Georgia Carney joined us from Sew Green, the new not for profit store
264-268 Arnett, in Geneva's building, corner of Arnett and Wellington.
Their Grand Open House is December 5th. On Black Friday (renamed Green
Friday by Georgia) they will be helping people make small gifts for
Christmas giving from 11-6 pm. Also, from Christmas through New Years Day
they will have a "My Favorite Monster Camp" from 10-12 am for children 10
and up or 8 with an adult. The store receives donations of knitting and
crochet needles, yarn, fabric, working newer sewing machines, sewing
notions, etc. These will be available for a small price for purchase. They
will also use the items for workshops and classes. Classes on knitting and
crocheting, sewing, etc. will be hosted and you can find a calendar on
their website www.sewgreenrochester.org
Dec. 5th around 1 pm. We will be putting up a Holiday tree in the park at Arnett and Welllington
Join us to help out!
On December 10th from 9:30-1 pm, School #29 will be coming down to
decorate the tree with their class-made ornaments and going into the
library for holiday stories. We can use more volunteers so please contact
Susan 436-1628 if you can help for even a portion of the time.
December 22 from 6-7 pm We will be hosting "Caroling in the Park" around a
small fire, marshmallows and hot cocoa and caroling. This is very family
friendly. We have even seen Santa join us in the past;)
January 16th, Feb. 13, March 12 and April 9th from 12-1 pm. There will be a Music Series at the library again this winter.
Susan reported on the Body Worn Cameras being used by the RPD. The info
nights remaining are November 30th at Danforth, Dec. 3 at Gantt Center.
The RPD website contains details if you are interested.
She also updated us on the arrests made having to do with the Boys and Girls Club shooting.
Eleven people have been arrested and there maybe more. The investigation
is ongoing.
Project Exile is doing a Toys for Guns event and may be able to use some volunteers. Contact 624-5555 if you are interested.
Our meeting closed in prayer for our community.
Happy Thanksgiving!!!
