From our new Crime Prevention Officer,  Andrew DiMaria:

There was a complaint yesterday of a solicitor at a residents home on Roslyn St.  The resident is older and lives alone.  An unknown male claimed he was selling a supplement for home security systems.  He did have an ID but it’s unknown what it read or if it was legitimate.  He was not let in the home.  He apparently did not go to any other homes either.  The resident in general did not feel comfortable with this gentleman.   The gentleman was described as a male white apprx 6’ tall and 40 years old.

He may have been there for a legitimate reason, we don’t know.  We do need to be aware of solicitors in the neighborhood because in the past there have been illegitimate groups of solicitors who looked to take advantage of the home alone and/or elderly.  Remember, ALL solicitors MUST have a valid City Of Rochester permit to solicit in the city and any legitimate solicitors will have an ID with them, visible, with the City Of Rochester logo on it.  Solicitors should not ask for personal info. (I.e. SS#’s) nor request it verbally or in writing.  DO NOT let anyone into your home.  If they do not have proper ID, or you feel uncomfortable, stop conversing with them and call 911.

NOTHING criminal happened in the above incident.  This is just a heads up for the community.  Any questions, anyone can contact me.  Thanks.

A solicitor for home security systems was at my home around dinner time tonight.  He did have an ID tag.  He most likely worked for the same as described, not selling security systems, but ancillary support.  The ID simply had his name on it.  It was not a valid ID with City of Rochester logo.  I simply told him I was not interested, and shut the door.
