I believe that the South WEDGE has a community tool shed/lending service but don't know of one here in the 19th ward- I think it's an idea that has been discussed from time to time.
Posting your request right here might get some positive responses..... i would let you borrow a tall ladder if i had one!

I believe the 19th Ward Community Association had one at one time, about 20 years ago. It may have been based from Hunt's, although I can't remember if there or the WCA office. Any historians have a thought? It would certainly be worth reviving, but who has the time and who has the space?

When we bought our house, we were wondering if there was one in the 19th Ward. It would be a great asset to the community. I would imagine that it could be time intensive, maybe it could be some thing the 19th Ward Association could start up. Is there something special your looking for?

The 19WCA did have a tool library at one time, and my understanding is that it was discontinued because of liability concerns. South Wedge does have one, so contacting them to see how they manage it would be a good first step.

19WCA had one, as did the NET office, but the 19WCA has closed theirs (as Marian says, due to liability concerns) and the NET office once went away when that was consolidated as I recall.

The SouthWedge may let you join their tool library (small fee).

I just figured I'd pass along this info. I called the South East Area Coalition (SEAC). http://www.myseac.org/index.html They are the ones who have the Tool Lending Library in the South Wedge. Right now it is closed for the winter months but will reopen in the Spring. You have to become a member of SEAC to use the Tool Lending Library. Yearly membership is $30 per household, $10 for students and seniors, and $50 for businesses. They have a lot of tools. Their website is under construction but hopefully soon their links will work and you can get more info there.

THanks for passing this along..... I wonder if we could use Location19 in a similar way without any cost.
If people were interested, it would be easy enough to have a specific 'group' titled "tool shed" - or something similar where those interested could post things they want/need to borrow and/or have available to share.

The 19th WCA may want to explore a tool library again.  As was pointed out, the South Wedge Planning Commission does have a tool library program for it's members (so somehow, they have managed to get around the liability issue).

I am not sure there is a liability issue anyway.  If someone signs a waiver when they borrow a tool, it does not exist.  But where would the tools come from?  In the past, about 25 years ago, the Association had the tool library and had the tools.  People could just sign them out.  How would it work?

Several neighborhood associations have "tool libraries", including SEAC, North East Area Development (NEAD) and Group 14621.  Liability is not generally an issue as long as your organization has general liability insurance (I'm not a lawyer, but I was executive director of both NEAD and Group 14621 and that was our solution).  If the 19th WCA wants to investigate resurrecting theirs, I'd be happy to share my experiences!  The very large ladders, post hole diggers, pruning tools and plumbing snakes were always our most requested tools!  You might want to start with a survey to 19th ward residents (or to the whole SW) to see what tools might be needed.  We always had a combination of donated and purchased items - this might be a good use of RACF NeighborGood funding if you link it to neighborhood outreach and increasing involvement in your neighborhood association (applications for the West Side will be due in Fall 2011).

I used to live in a small town down state where we had a 'Breakfast Club'. On either a Saturday or Sunday morning a group of 4 to 6 guys would meet for breakfast (sometimes at the persons home, wives that cook were great!) and the person who's home was getting worked on that day would buy. Then we would proceed to insulate, hang drywall, cabinets, countertops, windows, paint, etc. We'd work till 1 or 2pm and usually complete the project in a day. Some guys were just laborers, some were retired plumbers, some did landscaping all day for work, electricians, tile guys... but we came together and got each home done for the cost of breakfast. The next week it was another guys house. Maybe this would work in the 19th ward?

On another note, for the community tool shed, I used to sell cordless power tools on ebay. I got out of it, but I still have a lot of drills, circular saws, sanders, jig saws, sawzalls, batteries and chargers to spare. I'd be willing to donate to a community tool shed (maybe even host one) if it came together. I have no interest in being liable, but I have the tools and knowledge. 

Anyone else interested?
