Sorry to see Sensuous Satiables leave the corner of Thurston and Enterprise.  They are still in the Ward, though, in the former Creator's Hands/then RISEGO building on Arnett.

Sadly, Food Lovers has departed.  Really wanted to see a successfull local eatery there.  Food was pretty decent.

The brief-lived upholstery business next to Super Wings is gone.  A tatoo shop is moving in.

ughhhh..... none of this sounds like very good news Mark. I think it's the 3rd time that Sensuous Satiables has moved! I'm pretty sure that a 'tatoo shop' was not on many people's list of 'must haves' for Thurston Road. I haven't seen a "Thurston" update/newsletter for a couple of months now - perhaps one is in the making so we can be better informed of these changes. I know that Cricket had returned for a while (in a different location) but have not noticed whether it's still around. I think the casket shop might also be gone! (if so, that's probably a good thing if you subscribe to "supply and demand" business philosophy :-) I am always thankful for HUNTS!!

The most recent Thurston Brooks Merchants Association newsletter is posted on the "TBMA" link to the right.  As we are all quite part-time, other updates sometimes get delayed.

The second group of facades (4 bldgs) has gone to bid and the contracts are in place.  Construction should start as soon as all permits are in place.  The third group of facade improvements will go to bid shortly, and we hope that these will be complete during the fair weather and good construction season.  The Thurston Road Post Office is not on the list targeted to be closed, and recently renewed its lease in the present location (very good news for neighbors) - and they have since made some improvements inside the space.

Sensuous Satiables has indeed moved, but remains committed to the neighborhood.  Don Hanks, Street Manager for Thurston Road, is the key contact on any questions or concerns about businesses on the street.   He follows up on any concerns brought to our attention, but usually knows what's happening well before I hear about it!  He was out riding on Thurston yesterday even in the pouring rain - checking into the concerns about broken glass and debris behind one of the businesses.

Let me know if you need more information on any of these concerns, or if you have any other issues that I may be able to help address!

I'm impressed Joan.  I stopped by the area this afternoon where I had reported the broken glass and was amazed most of it was gone.  Don must have been picking it up in the rain.
My jaw dropped when I drove home the day after this was reported, and the glass was gone.  I could not believe it!  I don't know if Don did it, or the City, or the building occupants.  The response was so rapid, it was unlike anything ever experienced before.  Congrats on however it happened! The trash along the sides was also gone.  Now we could only hope it would stay in this condition.  A group was gathered there Thursday evening, playing basketball (younger kids,) with older kids sitting on the rail just hanging out.  This is a daily recreation spot. Someone has set up a basketball hoop along the back facing Enterprise.   It has been there for years.  The older ones sit behind someone's yard, on Thurston, facing the lot, so they can watch and do whatever.  The ironic note is that this used to be at one time the site for the 19th Ward Community Association office, and volunteers had contributed to plantings, did landscaping, and now it is a mess.
John B. saw Don Hanks the other night --- Don cleaned up the glass and litter.  Thanks, Don!  Let's see if we can get the owner of the building to take care of it.  It looks like the clothing store may be leaving (?)  They were not open again today at 4:30 when we were walking PAC-TAC.

I strongly second the motion that we need to get the building owner to take care of problems like this, and if they don't, we need to get the City to enforce code.  If we do not, we just enable the problems by cleaning up someone else's mess.

The 19th WCA will be restarting its Housing Committee to focus of code enforecement issues on residential streets.  We really need the merchants groups to press these issues on the commercial streets.

On a positive note for the tattoo shop, when Mark and I were walking PAC-TAC Monday we stopped to talk to Tim and Brenda Driscoll on Post Ave. and the fellow who is in the process of opening the Tattoo parlor was there and talking to them.  He seemed quite nice and assured us he is looking to have the business well run.
The new tatoo shop is open on Thurston.  It is named Flatlinerz.  Be sure to call for an appointment before you rush in!  And oh, there's another new one, at the corner of Thurston and Chili, on the northwest corner.  Yes, a note of sarcasm, but at least there are businesses operating in what were empty spaces.
