Many of the Discussions that are active on Location19 are interrelated with prior discussions or other discussions that are currently active. Information presented in one discussion is often appropriate to present in another post.
Rather than copy and paste text from a previous reply into a new discussion you can attach a Permalink to that previous reply.
Using Copy and Paste for the Permalink
For instance if Shawn wanted to reference a specific reply in his 2009 discussion: Welcome Teen Empowerment to the City South West! 392 Genesee Street, he could right-click on the Permalink () to the desired reply in that 2009 discussion :
and select Copy Link Location:
He can then Paste that Permalink wherever he wants it in the new reply.
He might for instance say, "Teen Empowerment holds a lot of promise as I expressed back in a 2009 post." He can then select the word "post" and click then paste the Permalink into the Link URL in the Edit Link box that appears:
That yields, "Teen Empowerment holds a lot of promise as I expressed back in a 2009 post."
Using Drag and Drop for the Permalink
If you have two windows open you can just drag and drop the permalink to where you want it. You just left-click on and drag the permalink to where you want it and when you release the left button the link drops in as: Permalink.
As is always the case with text that have links attached and appear in blue and underlined, while editing your post, you can left-click on the link text (in this case Permalink) then on Edit in the drop down box:
In the resulting pop up box:
1, replace the Link Text with whatever is desired. eg: " This is what I said back in 2009 about Teen Empowerment. " and 2, you may want to select the button so that it is easy for the reader to get back to the new discussion and go back and forth if they want.
(Note that the post link above brings the Permalinked page up in the same page or tab and you need to use Back to return to the new reply. That post link could have been edited to use a also.)
Advantages
In the above case referencing a 2009 post, using the Permalink approach draws attention to a previous discussion and can provide some historical perspective for the reader.
When using the a Permalink from one current reply to present the same information in several other current discussions, it avoids seaming repetitive to a reader looking over the Latest Activity listing and it makes any additional information presented in one post but not the other more obvious.
Some discussions include many replies and can last for months or years. It is often necessary to draw someones attention to a comment that was previously made in the same discussion. Permalinks are a good way to do this.
