Hi,

It was a good meeting over at Peter's beautiful B&B on Chili.  We talked about community WiFI and there were some questions about how that worked.  Wiki (of course!) had something about it.  It's long, and I haven't read it all.  But thought I share the link right away so folks can get their questions about it answered:

DeWain, I'm glad you've restated your reasons why you think that wifi implementation and foreclosure prevention are outside the ability of the 19WCA to address. That is exactly why I am proposing to look into these matters in one or more independent interest groups. Mark Twain said, "A boy who carries a cat home by the tail learns ten times as much as a boy who's told not to." So I guess we're considering carrying these two cats home by the tail. If we learn to much, we'll have to stop. If there aren't enough fools around to try, we won't even start. If we get anywhere, we'll let you know.

I wonder if the UR might help us out with Wi-FI. the entire medical center offers complimentary wi-fi and this might even extend across the river. For those working on this, it wouldn't hurt to see if they have any interest in extending their reach into the neighborhoods!

Re: the 19WCA and its priorities/focus ..... there is PLENTY of work to be done in the neighborhood so having a lot of interest is a good thing. The extreme challenge that we have (and will continue to have) is ensuring open communication about various initiatives so that we don't re-invent the wheel and/or work at cross purposes.

I think you are right Margy.  We should get the U of R involved.  In fact I think this is an excellent job for the SWCC Communications Committee that Eleanor Colman started and that you and I and several others are part of, along with Colleen McCarthy who represents the U of R.  This would be a great project for that group, which has not met for several months.

I just touched base with Eleanor to make sure she is up to leaping over tall buildings and she thought this sounded like a nice job for this group to try on for size.  We kicked around timing for a meeting and it sound like Thursday September 15th, right after the SWCC meeting (around 7:30PM) might be a good time since many of the Communications Committee members are planning on being there already and it's the earliest date we both could make.

Who's up for leaping tall buildings?

Brothels, drug houses, and illegal daycares are criminal offenses.  Definitely not the bailiwick of city code enforcers.  You need to call the RPD, DEA, and ATF for those things Sheri.
Applying pressure on the NSC to take code enforcement action on problem properties is a job that the Housing Committee is well suited to do.  Having the 19WCA involved gives the complaints more weight and ensures that unheeded complaints will get plenty of public exposure.  If the D&C doesn't jump at running the committee's complaints if code enforcement is not taken seriously, maybe Emily can give the committee a tutorial on uploading videos to YouTube.
It is resourceful of you to use every means possible to try to resolve the situation.  It is also a sad commentary that getting codes enforced is the only way to get somewhere with the drugs and prostitution.  Maybe they should be made into code violations and then you can fight them full on.  Having them be criminal offenses doesn't seem to help a whole lot, sounds like.  But, again, this is why I am absolutely flabbergasted when 20 police cars show up to enforce a civil dispute with the robo-signed bank foreclosures and properties illegally seized by the real estate company working for Fannie Mae, like on our street and then over on Appleton?    It begs the question about how the police are deciding to use their resources?  I'd feel much better knowing the police were giving you a hand Sheri with your brothel and drug house problem rather than sending a brazillion police to evict rightful owners of law-abiding single family homes.
I don't know if you've heard that the chief agrees that the evictions involving Fannie Mae can be done differently, and is actively working to solve that?  He never would have thought of changing what his people doing unless the protesters from that group had spoken up?  The thing on Appleton didn't involve protesters, btw.  Sorry if you interpret my tone as caustic.  It is not my intent.
