Comment by Marian Boutet on July 11, 2012 at 4:59pm: We signed up with the Better World Club, an alternative to AAA Auto Club, about 10 years ago because we wanted to support a company that offered road service for bicycles as well as cars. Now they’ve added accident and liability insurance for bicycles, so if you spend a lot of time on your bike you might want to check it out. Better World Club

Comment by Edward Cramp, Jr. on June 30, 2012 at 3:16pm: A project was launched by RocCity 2.0 to crowdsource the location of existing bike parking and places where such parking might be desired for public use and as information for the city.

The group originally asked the city if they had such a map. They did not but were potentially interested in such a product. When the map has had more time to fill in, it will likely be presented to the city as an unofficial report of where bicycle parking facilities are and aren't but are desired. How serious they will take our suggestions has yet to be seen, of course.

Parking infrastructure such as what is shown in the link below could be included as a recommendation where it would be desired. Of course, street installations would require more than just a recommendation for approval, but sidewalk installations would meet little resistance, especially in the form of post-and-rings.

Green marks indicate proper, secure bike racks and posts. Yellow indicates loose racks and the occasional fence. Red indicates the location of desired bike lock infrastructure.

The city provides the small post & wheel style bike stands, but some of these would be more effective (and hold more bikes). I'll share it with the Thurston Brooks Merchants Association, and Jefferson to see if they can be incorporated into the street improvements.

One issue that we need to address some time is the habit of many teens who go to the corner store to lay their bikes down in front of the steps, putting anyone going in and out at risk of injury. I think they do that to keep an eye on their bikes, but it is dangerous to other customers.

Comment by John Boutet on June 28, 2012 at 2:24pm: Just got an email for the 13th Annual HIGHLANDER CYCLE TOUR which is September 7-9, 2012 in the Finger Lakes area.

Back when this Tour ride started I was working with one of the guys who originated this event and I did some of the ride maps for the first 2 or 3 years. Beautiful scenery, killer hills on most rides. Driving over an hour to start a ride at 7 or 8am was not quite my cup of tea but I did part of some of the rides on my own the fist 3 years of the event.

Riders fro the short ride assembled at the north end of the Ontario Beach parking-lot. We set off along the River bike path at 10:20am.

The trails continues south along the west bank of the Genesee through Turning Point Park on a half mile long board walk. We then pedaled up a mile long shady bike path to Lake Avenue which we followed south to Driving Park where we see the Lower Falls of the Genesee.

We continued down St Paul planing to cross the Platt Street Bridge but it was closed for construction so we continued on St. Paul to South Ave and the Dinosaur BBQ for lunch. After Lunch we crossed the Court Street Bridge and took the Genesee Riverway Trail along the west side.

Beware the fancy brick strips as you pedal past the apartments and the boat landing. The bricks have sunk slightly below the level of the concrete path surface and can be bad news for bikes with skinny tires! One of the riders took a spill. Fortunately he did not take a dive in the river.

Our ride continued past Brooks Landing to the Canal Path where we went west to Long Pond for a detour around construction on Lee road. We then took Weiland Road to Latona to West Ridge where we connected to the 390 Bike Path to get back to Lake Ontario. In all we covered 31.7 miles. What a great day!
