Kiki's Baklava is Back - This Week Only!!

GREAT NEWS – For this week only, baklava is back! You may remember Nicola from last year's market, particularly if you've enjoyed her wonderfully delicious baklava. She's moved Kiki's Baklava out to the midwest, but is back in town for the market on July 24th. We think she will only be here for one week, so stock up.  It keeps for a very long time, and does not need refrigeration (in fact it doesn’t even like to be refrigerated).  I sure have missed that wonderful baklava, and am so happy I can purchase it once again.  And of course, we love seeing Nicola!

Help Your Favorite Farmers Beat the Heat

Farming is difficult at the very least this year.  The lack of rain is hurting farmers seriously.  Crops are shriveling in the heat.  If you see something you like, buy it now. Cook it up, freeze it, can it, whatever you need to do to preserve it.  Stop by the management tent or check out a book from the mobile library if you need recipes, we're always happy to help.  Our farmers are having a tough time getting to the market each week because the weather is taking their crop before they can pick it for market.  Be sure to thank them for coming, and buy what you can to support them.

I must say that I love seeing the shoppers come each week.  There is always a group of people sharing dinner in the dining tent, listening to music, and simply enjoying conversation with their neighbors.  We get to make new acquaintances, have a great time together, and continue to build a strong community.

Other Events this Week

Music this week Provided by Nick Humphrey
R Community Bikes will be at the market offering tune ups and collecting old bikes to refurbish. They offer their services to the community every other week at the market.
Ant Hill Co-op Bottle Collection - Got any plastic soda bottles lying around? Need a good use for them? Ant Hill Co-op will be collecting 2 liter plastic bottles at the market to build a greenhouse. Stop by the market management tent with any bottles you'd like to drop off and they'll be put to a great use!
Cookbook Library - Need a good recipe? No problem! The Westside Farmers Market is partnering with the Arnett Library to set up a mobile check-out desk at the market! They'll be with us each week with a crate full of great cookbooks. All you need is your library card!
Volunteer with us! - We're looking for volunteers to pass out doorhangers through the neighborhood. Deliver 50 doorhangers and we'll set you up with a free market bag! Stop by the market management tent for more information or to pick up doorhangers.
Visit the market to support our local vendors!

Food stamps can be used for buying seeds? This information needs to be spread far and wide if we want to eliminate the food deserts in our city.

Marian and I have been enjoying fresh vegetables and fruit from the market all summer.  We picked up some sweet corn, cucumbers and tomatoes from Duncan Mackenzie this week and have really enjoyed them.

Here is an album with pictures taken in June.
