Two weeks ago, Erica Bryant (D&C) recommended:  The New Jim Crow:  Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander.  I am only about 1/4 through the book.  It is very disturbing and thought provoking.

Here is more detail about the subjects of these books. White Like Me and Between Barack and a Hard Place, discus "white privilege" and "white denial of racism".

Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, written by Joy Degruy Leary, deals with the African American experience from 1619 and addresses these questions: "What do repeated traumas visited upon generation after generation of a people produce? What are the impacts of the ordeals associated with chattel slavery, and with the institutions that followed, on African Americans today?"

 Afrocentricity: The Theory of Social Change (Revised and Expanded), written by Molefi Asante (September 1, 2003). Dr. Asante is the Director of the African Studies Program at Temple University. Dr. Asante states that this text combines, "the elements of philosophy, science, history, and mythology to give us the clearest perspective on that peculiar and particular group of people called African - Americans."

Tim Wise also has a website: timwise.org - the website is filled with a lot of great information and thought provoking commentary as well as links to videos of some of his presentations.
