Montgomery Neighborhood Center History:
Montgomery Neighborhood Center has a long and impactful history that dates back to 1922 when Miss Lilliam Hall, Industrial Secretary of the Y.W.C.A. opened a branch at 192 Clarissa Street to accommodate the large enrollment of young African American American working womein in the former Unity Club. Mrs. Helen Barrett Montgomery and Mrs. Mary J. Gannett were instrumental in the Y.zZZW.C.A. forming the Clarissa Street Branch as an independent agency. The agency was accepted as a member of the Council of Social Agencies on April 1, 1952.
In 1961, the current building was developed and the mission of Montgomery was revised to "operate and maintain a neighborhood center in Rochester, NY to promote and foster neighborhood life and to guide its development." The programs and services were designed to meet the needs of the community: Rehabilitation of housing, development of block clubs, programs for Seniors and Youth.
Montgomery Senior Center offers meals daily (M-F), and offers social, educational and health programs to residents over the age over age 60.
Transportation is available.
