City Noise Code

Here's a flyer handed out tonight by the E2 Block Club, thanks to help from 19th WCA members John B. and Bill N. Any group can use by changing the contact info. Ofc. Kristin Runyon can even make copies for you. Call her at the NSC office.

Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know the flyer Kristin helped prepare and that John and Bill helped distribute seems to have been a big success. Either that or it was a fluke. It was quiet all weekend with the exception of a brief time with very loud music coming over Saturday probably from Ellicott St. Today there was a loud car parked in the street for a while, and I actually heard someone else yell at them to turn it down. It was turned off. The fact is, I found out when talking with them, people ARE NOT AWARE of what the Code is.

Marian B. was over for a bit and can attest to the peace and quiet. At that point, I had invited the man over who was one source of noise from last weekend (new, never met him before,) and we sat and had a few beers in the back yard, and I gave him a copy of the flyer. I told him my backyard was my living room during the summer. I think he got the point. All was in a most friendly way, and from what I heard from John and Bill, there were few negative comments when we were handing out flyers. I think Bill got one and I got one.

I was so hesitant about this that it really made a difference to have John and Bill providing assistance. Kris reports the Woodbine/Arnett area requested flyering also, and maybe we can tackle that next. John has the flyers already.

I am glad that this worked for you Mark.
I am wondering whether anyone knows the level of enforcement re: the noise code in our neighborhood??
I cannot think of even one day this summer that i've NOT been annoyed by LOUD MUSIC blasting from cars in our neighborhood. Almost any time i sit on my front porch there is at least one (and usually more) vehicle driving down the street with open windows and loud music - generally, the cars don't belong to immediate neighbors. Likewise, I experience this almost anytime I'm stopped at a 19th ward intersection (Thurston/Brooks is especially loud).
It seems that some targeted enforcement of the noise code might help the overall problem, raise some $$ for the city AND get the message out that this is a REAL code with REAL consequences.
I appreciate the 'neighborly' approach of 'could you please turn your music down', but that doesn't work for cars flying down streets and in/out of our neighborhood.
