A big problem is hypocrisy ("Don't do as I do, do as I say"). Dealers clearly cause trouble (and our street made it uncomfortable enough for at least two houses of people that they moved), and apparently responsible adults say they disapprove, but I know what I smell coming out of homes and yards of some of the very people (with no kids) and who decry this problem. There's always some excuse, but in the light of violence, they don't hold up. ANY business that has no customers goes away, and this is no different. Let's have the courage to stop feeding those animals.

I had a similar experience there almost a year ago. I thought I'd go in to support them because they're up the street and I was made to feel as if I had three heads on my shoulder and didn't belong there. I've never gone back. I was sad to see El Latino leave, because I really like their food and I could just walk to it.

The problem lies both within and outside of the neighborhood. People that have no intention of being law abiding citizens move into the neighborhood only to leave a short time later for one reason or another. There are also people from the suburbs who patron illegal activities in and around area businesses.

Gregorios on Chili Ave across from Kwik Fill is also becoming a problem area. The people who run the store are notorious for selling alcohol and tobacco to minors (presumably from the town of Gates and Chili). These same minors no doubt also buy drugs from loiterers who hang outside around the store. Word must be spreading fast through the suburbs because every week there's more of these kids at the store buying beer, blunt wraps, and drugs.

Anthony and I were wondering how such a place could be so busy! We figured it had to be "loosies" and beer.

It's funny that you mentioned the kids coming in from Gates and Chili. Because many times on my way to and from work at Wegmans Corp offices on Chili Ave, I see young kids on their bikes and skate boards coming into the city up Chili Ave near the train track underpass. I would think to myself, do they know something about the neighborhood that I don't? Since I have to go to Gates and Chili to get the things I need, what are they coming to the 19th Ward for? lol

lol now you know why. I only know because my husband likes that store. He returns from there at least once a week complaining that the kids are going to get them shut down (more like the owners are going to get themselves shut down lol). He's witnessed them plunking down cases of beer on the counter and asking for blunt wraps. Interestingly they don't sell loosies.

BTW, is that LT's or LJ's Restaurant? If it's LJ's, they are listed here, and perhaps we could ask them to work with us to make this activity around their store stop.

Hey Marcy, good catch. I have a habit of calling it LT's, but it is LJ's. As for the listing on the main page of Location19, I put it there back when I created the site, before I know now. I am going to remove it. In my naivety, I was posting links to all the business I could think of. I figures if they were in the neighborhood, I would support them. Now I know they may not support us.

LJ's actually has been a neighborhood mainstay for many years, so I would hold off on forming an opinion on them. We have been there with the Urban Foodies group, and food was excellent. Owners have been there many years, and improved that corner significantly. I think you need to investigate more, as all my experiences with them have been positive. I also have the feeling they are most interested in the neighborhood and open to any discussions. Don't be too hasty on this one, we don't need to lose another anchor until people go in and check it out. Their red snapper is excellent! I am suggesting in this case is more support, maybe some input, and keep improving the neighborhood. They actually have been, over history, so please see if we can work with them and help all of us.

another shooting!?!?! RIDICULOUS...............broad daylight, beautiful day and we have this $&(# continuing in our neighborhood. I am sick and tired of this violence!
As for the comments re: suburban drug buyers, I'd be very interested in seeing the statistics re: who is buying the drugs in our neighborhood. There are plenty of drugs available in Pittsford, Brighton, Chili, Brockport, etc so I don't believe that the majority of our local business support is coming from the suburbs!
Re: Gregorio's (or whatever its called), that place has appeared to be trouble for months and months now- PACKED on the weekend along with the full parking lot in a nearby building (I think i recall hearing that there was some gambling going on). Combine those places with the THurston "clubs" and you get a sense of what we're known for- cheap drinks, underage sales of beer/smokes, drugs, etc.
we need to SHUT DOWN the places that are promoting and/or harboring illegal activity - what's it going to take to do that!??

Back in the early 90's a number of us got together and protested in front of stores that were breaking the law. We told people what was happening, and that we didn't like it. The police were with us, so I think PAC TAC was involved, along with the 19WCA, I think R.A.I.N. (Rochesterians Against Illegal Narcotics) might have been part of the organizing, as well. We picked times when they were most likely to be "busy" (summer day, peak times) and drew attention to them. I think Dana Miller was with us at the time, so you could ask him, also, and maybe Adam McFadden knows about it, too. We shut several places down. :-)

One thing is for sure, it is time for me to join PAC TAC again. It's only one time a month for 2 hours (you pick the day and time) and you are walking with at least on other person with police walkie talkies and sometimes the police, too. It was very effective when we had more people walking. In fact, if we could get a number of people in, we could get more coverage and visibility. With a good Crime Prevention Officer it is very interesting, rarely does anything happen, and you get good exercise with another person. Any takers on this piece of the puzzle?

Picketing? That is awesome! I think it's time we start taking back our streets. I am really tired of this crap. I bet some of the U of R and RIT kids would totally get into help. I'm going to think about this one ;) Thanks for sharing Marcy.

I was looking at the member list. There are a number of involved individuals people who I know were quite active in the Ward in the past - perhaps one of them will see the discussion and let us know how these were arranged.
