Event Description

Located in the heart of the 19th Ward, St. Monica catholic Church is focused on remaining a beacon of hope for its neighbors and community.  This Ash Wednesday, St. Monica Church, at 831 Genesee St., will do something like no other church in the city of Rochester.  the church doors will open at 12 Midnight, where volunteers will remain at the church all evening to distribute ashes for anyone who comes into the church.  St. Monica's pastor, Raymond Fleming, will be hearing confession all night (morning) long.  The Ash Wednesday event will continue throughout the day, where many church volunteers will be there to continue the distribution of ashes, and Father Fleming will be available for confession.  Mass will be held at 12:10PM, and the day will close with Night Prayer at 7PM.  This Ash Wendesday, St. Monica hopes to renew commitment to its community, as a support to bring people together in faith, hope and conversion.

Although I've been a Quaker for over 40 years, I was raised Roman Catholic, and one of my fondest memories was just knowing that the churches were open 24 hours a day to anyone who wanted or needed to go in. This event reminds me of that. As a kid, I used to brag to my Protestant friends that, if they ever needed a place of safety or just to get away for a while, the church doors were always open--even to them.
