As we look at getting our whole community online we should recall the SWCC started this quest on September 15, 2011 as documented in the SWCC Communications Committee Meeting Minutes. After March 2014 the work done by Communications Committee members was folded into the Education Committee reports. By July 9, 2012 - (WiFi) we presented the state of out proposal to the County Legislature. We had learned they had installed high-speed fiber-optics throughout the City and County but most remained dark because of private sector opposition.
The COVID-19 lock-down has made it clear that in today's world all members of our community, rich and poor need to have high-speed internet connections and necessary computer devices to connect all students to their schools and all workers and job seekers to jobs. Recently I spoke to City Councilmember Malik Evens at an outreach meeting he had and reminded him how much we need connectivity in the City and the slow progress we are seeing with the Greenlight Network. He will look into what the City can do to revive the effort that the City had announced. Two days later at a Rochester Coalition for Public Education meeting I again brought up our need to push this internet issue. A member of that group is Howard Maffucci, a member of the County Legislature. Howard indicated that County Executive Adam Bellow is pushing to finally make use of the fiber infrastructure the county had invested in over ten years ago.
We must persevere and make this happen!
I hope you will join us on Thursday the 20th at 6:00pm to discuss this issue. We will try to keep this meeting down to one hour. With Zoom it is easy to set up a follow-on meeting if needed to press an issue.
See you Thursday,
John
