19th Ward Community Cats

This group is for 19th Ward residents who are concerned about the plight of stray, feral, and abandoned cats in our neighborhood.  It is our goal to live in a community where all cats are treated humanely and cats and humans live in harmony.

Please don't litter! Spay and neuter!

Please check out our Facebook page:

That is where most of our communication is happening right now.  You may also contact us via the 19th Ward Community Association at 328-6571 to get on our email list.

19th Ward Community Cats was hard at work in 2015!!!  In 2015, we were able to spay/neuter 287 free roaming cats in the 19th Ward as part of the City Kitty project.  They were also vaccinated,  and treated for fleas, worms, and parasites.  That's 287 outdoor cats who've received vet care and will no longer be reproducing on our streets or be vulnerable to disease!  Approximately 80 of those cats/kittens were placed for adoption with our City Kitty partner, Four-Legged Friends Animal Adoptions, Inc., and they're now in loving forever homes- off the streets entirely!  Members of this group and colony caretakers volunteer their time and bear the financial burden for much of this work.  If you'd like make a financial contribution to this group please take or mail your donation to the 19th Ward Community Association Office, 216 Thurston Road.  Every dollar is spent on vet care for our community cats.  If you'd like to help in any other way, please let us know!  Thank you!!

Hello all!

Sorry to take so long getting this out, it’s been a crazy week -- but things are in motion on the Square Fair!

We have a booth space reserved. It will be 10’x10’ and we will need to supply our own furniture, and a canopy if we want one. Ann Robinson says that decisions on where booths are located aren’t finalized until the morning of the fair, but that preferences for spaces go at least in part by first come first served, and we were early in getting ours in, so we have some chance of getting what I’ve asked for -- a corner space on the shady side.

Laura Burns from Habitat for Cats has said that it would work well for them to share the booth with us. They have a tri-fold information display, and Laura says they could also bring an adoptable cat. I think that would be great! I asked for the corner booth so that we could set up tables at the two open sides, and have the cage with the cat on the inside, where it would be protected from having too many crowds around, but people who wanted to get closer would be able to.

I have a cheap canopy whose size I’ll know when I get it out of storage this weekend, and Laura says she (or Habitat?) also has a canopy (which would probably be better than mine). But everyone who has comfy folding chairs and/or smallish tables, those will be useful! Also an easel, if anyone has one.

Heidi and I met on Sunday and we did some brainstorming about what we want to do with our part of the booth space. Here are our combined notes:
 info/education about 19th ward Community Cats
mailer/brochure on table -- who will cover costs of printing? We have some money … The brochure may be cheaper to print (regular paper), but it would be good for people to see some copies of the mailer there so they recognize it

 ask for donations – and have a couple of choices (different tins): TNR, food/shelter, printing/mailing costs

 maybe have a cat shelter at fair (ask Margy); it would be good to have shelter-building event for late summer(?) If we have a date, we can advertise it there and get sign-ups.

 sell “trinkets” for fundraiser: I’ve found a web site with materials for break-away cat collars (which we could then stamp with our name or a logo, and let purchasers write on with a sharpie; we could also sell donated or cheaply purchased toys

 I want to start the community cat census at this year’s fair. I’ve got a big map from the city. We can have people who have pet cats or feed homeless cats (or for that matter are bothered by them or see them around) put marks (numbers) on the map, then on a separate list give their contact information, along with whether their cats need to be spayed or neutered. Later we can get back to them about doing this, and also invite them to send photos of their cats to put on a Google map on the web site. (Heidi has a friend who knows how to save maps with links.)

The next meeting is Tuesday, May 25th at 5:30, at the Community Association building. Between now and then let’s see if we can line up volunteers for booth time, furniture, and trinkets to sell (if we want to do that). At the meeting, we can make sure we know what all the responsibilities are, who is doing them, and when, as well as collect booth furniture so we can make sure that how we plan to arrange it is actually possible.

Thanks, Alice! I'll miss it then this Sunday, but will come on the 25th. (A friend's son has a solo recital as part of the Rochester Youth Philharmonic Orchestra's concert at that time, and it would mean a lot if I were there.)
See all of you soon.

Hi Bill -- and everyone -- Sorry about not getting that confirmed! We are meeting on BOTH days, since there is plenty to do to get ready for 6/5. So Bill, I'd say if you need to miss Sunday that's ok, since you can still help out on the 25th.

Does anyone know when we are meeting this month? I know we talked about this Sunday, May 9, 4:00 at Boulders or Tuesday, May 25 5:30 at the 19th Ward office. May 25 works best for me. (I've got something on Sunday, but am willing to miss it if it's necessary.)

Tuesday the 25th at 5:30 is fine. As for the other three cats in the colony, just call Bob and set something up. He always carries his cell (I don't want to post his phone number here, but I'll e-mail it to you, Alice). The cats come to the sound of his voice so it shouldn't be too difficult to set up the traps in his yard and lure them in. I agree the pregnant one especially needs to be taken care of soon.

Oh, I forgot. Sheri, I'll have to learn how to access such files as you sent. There's a way, I am sure, but I don't know how. I'm anxious to read them.

Thanks!

Alice, I've put both dates on my calendar. We had much success on our first pilgrimage to Habitat. Thanks to Alice and Marian with whom I went and all the stuff they did, and to those who made donations of $$ and the loans of traps.

Meanwhile, as to meeting times, I've heard from Ron that weekday early evenings work him, and from Heidi and Marian that they won't for them, at least this month. I think what I'd like to suggest is one of each, so that different people can be involved in planning for our presence at Square Fair.

How about Sunday May 9 at 4 pm at Boulder Coffee, and Tuesday May 25th at 5:30 at the 19th Ward offices? Marian, would that work for you?

That's great news, Marian!

If Mr. Burris would be willing to help, I'd be interested in trying to trap the other three females as soon as possible, even while you're gone, since we've got the money to cover the surgeries and we're running out of time (evidently) on one of them. I'm not available on Wednesday afternoons, but could do morning transport.

Two cats, both females, are back home resting comfortably in their traps. I put in some clean newspaper and gave each of them a bowl of kitty stew (kibble soaked in warm water). I'll keep them in the garage overnight to recuperate and then turn them loose tomorrow.

Thanks to Bill Nichthauser, Lisa Jadwin, and Bob Burris for the loan of traps and to Bill for running the cats to the clinic and back with Alice and me. Donations from generous neighbors covered today's surgeries and enough for two more animals (three if you count our existing credit at Habitat for Cats).

Laura at Habitat recommended that we treat all of them for worms with a medication called pyrantel pamoate. I've Googled it and found a 16-oz bottle by mail order that should last for many treatments, but it doesn't seem to be available to purchase locally. If anyone knows of a local source, let me know and I'll go and pick some up. Otherwise, I'll order it online and it will be available to the group as needed.

John and I will be away next week, and a neighbor has offered to feed the colony while I'm gone. In the meantime, Bob is coming over a couple times of day with the troop - they follow him like a Pied Piper - and we feed them here at my house so they can get used to eating here and hopefully they will re-locate their headquarters.

There are three more in this colony - they all look to be female from a distance and one looks pregnant. We can arrange for spay/neuter when I get back on the 10th of May unless someone wants to try sooner. Let me know if you do; I have three traps and canned food for bait.
