Please don't litter! Spay and neuter!

Please check out our Facebook page:

http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/19thWardCommunityCats/

That is where most of our communication is happening right now.  You may also contact us via the 19th Ward Community Association at 328-6571 to get on our email list.

19th Ward Community Cats was hard at work in 2015!!!  In 2015, we were able to spay/neuter 287 free roaming cats in the 19th Ward as part of the City Kitty project.  They were also vaccinated,  and treated for fleas, worms, and parasites.  That's 287 outdoor cats who've received vet care and will no longer be reproducing on our streets or be vulnerable to disease!  Approximately 80 of those cats/kittens were placed for adoption with our City Kitty partner, Four-Legged Friends Animal Adoptions, Inc., and they're now in loving forever homes- off the streets entirely!  Members of this group and colony caretakers volunteer their time and bear the financial burden for much of this work.  If you'd like make a financial contribution to this group please take or mail your donation to the 19th Ward Community Association Office, 216 Thurston Road.  Every dollar is spent on vet care for our community cats.  If you'd like to help in any other way, please let us know!  Thank you!!

Margy, that certainly is wonderful news about Moxie. I've heard about all that you do. That's great, and appreciated!

Sorry that Kristi and I have been unable to attend these meetings but we've kept up via emails and most recently heard from Sheri about the last meeting.
In the world of 'good news', one of our feral/strays that we rescued this past summer has a new home! "Moxie" was a small black and white cat who made her way here this past summer. We were able to trap her and then spay her. She integrated well into the other group in our back yard but as winter approached she started becoming more trusting of us! in early December she made her way into our basement and we worked on trying to socialize her but also letting her outside each day. She clearly wanted/needed to be a pet cat and yesterday we placed her with a family who has wanted a cat. As of this afternoon, Moxie has adjusted amazingly well to her new family and is in a home where she is wanted..... I will be adding her 'story' to the powerpoint slide show i created for our Marlborough cat group.

Sorry Inge! (and everyone) -- It was Sunday, I was just tired when I wrote it.

Hi all,
I'm little confused. Was the meeting on Sunday the 10th or Saturday the ninth? I have been unable to attend the meetings except the first one since they have fallen on my volunteer Sundays or as was the case this past weekend, family birthdays. I could have been there on Saturday.
I'm pleased to see things are progressing.

Hi All,

Our next meeting will be Sunday, February 7, 2pm, at the 19th Ward Community Association office, 214 Thurston Road.

In the meantime, think about a logo for a t-shirt. The Seattle, Washington group has "Sexless in Seattle" and we came up with "Nineteenth and Neutered," but you all can probably do better than that.

Looks like a lot got done! Great news. Sorry I was at work and have not made a meeting.

Please let us know when the new web site is up! Will also be interested in knowing about NSC mailing. Please report back on this. If they do not want to do it, it may be possible that PAC TAC could. I am hoping to walk next week.

Hi all,

We had a great meeting on Saturday -- we got a lot done.

Here’s what I have down from my notes; if anyone remembers more (or other!) chime in!

1. We have a mission statement! Our final version reads:
19th Ward Community Cats believes ant every animal should be treated humanely. It is our mission to improve the quality of life in the 19th Ward by fostering a healthy relationship between people and cats. We will educate neighbors about responsible pet ownership and the plight of homeless cats. We will minimize the feral cat population through humane means, to maximize the well-being of cats and our community.

We can take final comments on it and I will put it up on the new web site.

2. We will soon have a new web site! (to be www.19thwardcats.org)
We agreed that a web presence is key to building the organization, and I noted that it costs $70 to put up a basic (but ad-free) web site for one year, using the host that I use. There were 7 people at the meeting, so all agreed to chip in $10; those checks are all here, so I’ll be putting it up in the next couple of days.

Over the next meetings we will decide who will have the administrative password to keep it up (at least 2 people but no more than 4), and collect links and material to add to it. We will link to the 19th Ward site and make it plain that we are an affiliate, but we do not need to try to match the 19th Ward site since that site will change -- hopefully soon.

Heidi will contact Kristin, the student who had volunteered to help us when we thought we were doing a more complicated project of working with the current 19th Ward site, thank her for her willingness to help, and let her know she’s off the hook.

Marian will contact Ann Robinson or the treasurer to find out the number of the account that we believe has already been set up for feral cat funds, and with luck will have that information to Heidi by 6 pm tomorrow so that she can pass it on to Sean, who will put a donation button on Location19. (We will do the same thing on our web site as soon as it is up.)

3. I brought along a draft of a promotional flier to pass around, and Marian printed out copies for everyone of the history section of the site she mentioned last meeting, for the Feral Cat Project in Washington state. We talked about various details from both documents: It costs the Feral Cat Project $38 for each cat they spay. In Rochester, the cost for Habitat for Cats is similar, about $45. FCP started in 1997; we would one day like to have the same kind of spay/neuter availability that they can offer.

As yet the Neighborhood Service Team has not responded to phone messages I left last week about what kind of assistance they can offer with a ward-wide mailing. Once we know more about that, we can decide how to proceed with getting a flier out, either by mass mailing or by volunteers fliering their streets.

4. I suggested that the next important step will be to find out what vet resources, both people and facilities, are actually available by calling the vets from the list provided by Laura Burns. We agreed that we first need to contact Laura to make sure that we aren’t re-doing work that has already been done; I will do that tomorrow, and also convert the Excel list to an Access database so that it will be easier to figure out how many clinics are actually on the list. Heidi will work on this, and take out the clinics that are far from Rochester. Next meeting (assuming the calls are indeed worth making according to Laura) we will finalize a “phone sheet” of questions to pose to each clinic (including “who should I be speaking to about this?”!)

Marian,
What day?

Hey all,

The next meeting will be at the 19th Ward Community Association office, 214 Thurston Road, at 7:00 pm. Note the change in time to accommodate the sports fans!

Notes from the last meeting will follow soon.

We have a very long way to go to make this happen, so please make every effort to attend and add to the discussion. In the meantime, take a look at this web site from the Seattle, WA Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Project for inspiration. Their t-shirt that reads, "Sexless in Seattle" and clearly they have developed a superior program.
