Please don't litter! Spay and neuter!

Please check out our Facebook page:

http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/19thWardCommunityCats/

That is where most of our communication is happening right now.  You may also contact us via the 19th Ward Community Association at 328-6571 to get on our email list.

19th Ward Community Cats was hard at work in 2015!!!  In 2015, we were able to spay/neuter 287 free roaming cats in the 19th Ward as part of the City Kitty project.  They were also vaccinated,  and treated for fleas, worms, and parasites.  That's 287 outdoor cats who've received vet care and will no longer be reproducing on our streets or be vulnerable to disease!  Approximately 80 of those cats/kittens were placed for adoption with our City Kitty partner, Four-Legged Friends Animal Adoptions, Inc., and they're now in loving forever homes- off the streets entirely!  Members of this group and colony caretakers volunteer their time and bear the financial burden for much of this work.  If you'd like make a financial contribution to this group please take or mail your donation to the 19th Ward Community Association Office, 216 Thurston Road.  Every dollar is spent on vet care for our community cats.  If you'd like to help in any other way, please let us know!  Thank you!!

Inge, I am HOPING that he had just managed to escape his house, and that she hadn't been allowing an unneutered male to roam the streets freely without ID.  The fact that he was full grown yet not neutered makes me cringe too, but the sad fact is, not everyone gets that they need to spay and neuter.  :-/ I don't really know how much more simple we can make that message, but apparently there are a LOT of folks out there who just aren't getting it.

Jes,

I feel for you having to give her bad news  and the poor young women's loss. A pet loss  to me is like the loss of a family member. It is unfortunate that she waited a long time to to put up a flyers looking for him.But  what I find far more distressing  that the cat had an owner that allowed him to be outside without identification and that he was not neutered. This is a loss that could have been prevented with responsible pet ownership.

Thank you for the follow up.

Don't know if you guys remember the orange tabby cat I found deceased on my porch in August, but when I went home to the old house on Westfield St. today to pick up more stuff to move to the new house,  there were flyers looking for a lost kitty matching his description.  The cat that I found was unneutered and I was so hoping when I called this person they would say theirs was neutered so I could spare her the pain of reporting that their cat was indeed dead...but when I called and inquired she said he hadn't been neutered.  I felt so bad having to tell this poor girl that I probably had found her cat and it wasn't good news...she kept asking if I was sure and I said I hoped that it was just coincidence but that the description she provided as to the size of the cat (she had listed that he was small for a full grown cat and I had thought he was between 7-9 months or so just based on his size), I'm fairly sure this was her boy.  I am just so sad for her...he had no identification though, and because he was unneutered I assumed he had come from one of the colonies in the area.  I wish she had put fliers up immediately instead of just this past week, maybe I could have at least gotten his body back to her so she could dispose of him as she wanted to.  I'm just bummed out. :-(

Sheri,

I'm so glad that Inky came back!

Thanks for all you do!

Let me know what kind of help you might need. For now I have an outside cage where we temporarily kept a feral mom and kitten until we could get them fixed (guaranteed to be there on the day of the appointment). We also have a trap we haven't used recently because the feral who now lives in our yard keeps retrapping herself when I am trying to catch others.

Where is she seeing all of these cats?  I've noticed less by me recently than there originally were..thought maybe our TNR efforts had paid off!  LOL  Guess new ones have moved in, which is what they are wont to do.

OH, and meant to say, hubby sighted two young black cats, one around 6-12 months, one maybe 3-4 months, in the backyard the other day.  I saw a young black kitten that had been unfortunately hit by a car just around the corner on Genesee Park Blvd. last week so I'm wondering if there is a whole litter of these guys running around the area.  Just an FYI.

Sheri, she'll just make her way back here, I think. I'm thinking someone else must feed her as she often doesn't eat everything we've left and she appears healthy and at an appropriate weight. I hate worrying about these outside cats all the time...you'd think the 16 IN my house would be enough worry!  LOL

My apologies to everyone for not checking in and rescheduling a gathering, but a lot of stuff has happened in the last month!  We will be welcoming a new family member in February, and will be moving to East Irondequoit in August.  Whew...I'm tired already!

I wanted to find out if anyone on Westfield Street cares for ferals (aside from me).  I'm particularly concerned about a female kitty whom we call Mama Cat...she typically has depended on us for food for the last few years and can be found waiting in my backyard or driveway for her daily meal.  She's a lovely tortie girl with greenish eyes and a tipped left ear (we had Habitat for Cats spay her two years ago), terrified of people.  When we move, we won't be able to feed her anymore, and I worry about the poor thing.  We know she can't be tamed as we had trapped her twice and tried to see if she'd come around, to no avail, but the thought of her being hungry and having to resort to hunting alone makes me sad.  If anyone lives on the south end of Westfield and doesn't mind leaving a dish out for Mama Cat once we relocate in August, it would be most appreciated!  Hope everyone is well and that missing cats in the last month or two have been located!

OH, PS: I've sighted a skinny grey tabby with a white stripe up his or her nose a few times on my porch stealing the food we leave for Mama.  That one's scared too, not sure where it may have come from.

Help! I don't know how to respond to Doreen's message about her little of kittens. The message that I received repeated her message but didn't give an e-mail address for a reply, only the link to this page, and I don't see anything on this page about her message. Can someone who is better with this site than I am make sure she gets a response? Many thanks!!
