End-of-Summer Youth Program Celebration Fri, 8/15, 4-7 @ Gandhi Institute, 929 So. Plymouth Ave!!!

Hello from Lisa Barker, Youth Employment Director

Hope this finds you well. I'd like to invite you to join our 2014 Seedfolk Youth Team for our summer program closing celebration / block party-this Friday, August 15,  4-7pm  at the Gandhi Institute.

For the last 6 weeks, we've had a truly exceptional group of 12 teens working in our 2014 Seedfolk / Grow SouthWest Summer Youth Employment Program, learning about and participating in the local food system through tending our urban gardens, working at our markets and store, cooking in our kitchen, spreading the word in our community, and more.

To celebrate the end of the program and all that has been accomplished, the youth have been working hard to plan a community block party.  Some of the fun to be had will include delicious food prepared by the youth, live t-shirt screenprinting, face-painting and activities for children, a raffle fundraiser, tours of our onsite urban garden, a photo gallery of our summer program, and more. We'll also have our locally grown produce for sale.

Additionally, the youth have been working on a documentary highlighting the Seedfolk program alongside local filmmaker Alex Freeman, which we are very excited to view and showcase at Friday's event!
The 2014 Summer Youth Employment Program has been a joint effort of ProsperRochester, Inc and The Center For Youth Services, through the RochesterWorks! SYEP/SOOP program. We've also had great support from the folks at In the City Off The Grid, The Greenhouse Cafe, The Gandhi Institute, Small World Food, and The Gandhi Institute.

New Seedfolk Store Hours:  Tues-Fri, 1:30 -  6 p.m.   The Seedfolk Store will not be open on Saturdays during the summer as work shifts toward managing "Seedfolk City Farms" at 929 So. Plymouth (next to the Gandhi Institute) and the E. Main St. Greenhouse location (2271 E. Main St.).

The 9 youth who have been employed for 6 months and working at these location will have a Closing Ceremony on Fri. 6/13 from 4-7 p.m. at The Seedfolk Store.

Preparations are now being made to employ 12 youth through RochesterWorks! and in partnership with the Center for Youth.  We have secured funding to continue to employ 2 current youth over the summer in addition to the new team of 12.  Visit us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/seedfolkstore.

I'm kind of relieved that Wednesday's weather forecast is for 45 degrees.  That will make it easier for folks to decide to come inside to attend Wednesday's workshop at The Gandhi House.  Hope to see lots of you there!
