We talked about it a bit at this morning's "We Care" meeting and from what David Hawks said this form had been discussed a few weeks ago at a meeting that was held at the NSC office that I missed because it coincided with one of the School 16/SW Education Committee meetings.

The Friday deadline has something to do with a State requirement... maybe for this particular list of properties.  It will be used again, he said, throughout the year.

Wow John! this is quite a list - thanks for taking the time to share this information with us.

I am curious as to why the City says that they are seeking "community input" yet we're just hearing about the option one day before the deadline!?! It seems a somewhat chronic problem that "community" ends up being defined as a small group of people who have access to information while others who may/may not be interested hear about things in the '11th hour' with little or no opportunity to DO anything! I'd be interested in learning what groups "count" as "neighborhood and community groups".

The following information was reviewed by Joan Roby-Davison at the Housing Committee meeting this Wednesday morning September 12:

Periodically the City has been selling tax liens it has on properties that are very delinquent on their taxes.  While that provides immediate income to the city, what happens to the properties is not always in the best interest of the neighborhoods involved.  This can lead to properties being neglected for years, being sold for rentals or to developers who may want to demolish a historic building to use the property for what will get them the fastest return.  To try to improve this process the City has just recently introduced an input form to let Neighborhood & Community Groups request that properties which the city plans to sell the liens on or to demolish be treated in an alternate way. 

The request can be to:

Demolish property due to condition.
Demolish property for development project.
Demolish property for other reason (please specify below).
Acquisition by City for municipal purpose (ex.-park, school, etc. Please state.)
Acquisition by City for future resale via auction or RFP.
Sale at tax foreclosure auction for purchase through open competitive bid.
Inclusion in Redevelopment program (ex. Home Rochester, JOSANA, etc. Please state.)
or, Other:

Unfortunately for this go-around this Friday September 14 is the deadline for input.

OK, just to show how flexible the Housing Committee hours can be, the first meeting of the season will be on Sept 12th, NOT the 5th. (Seriously, I put it on the wrong day; it was always the 12th.)

I am meeting with Rich Warner of FLower City Work Camp made up of Christian youth church groups from all over Monroe County.  Every year, this group fixes up about 60 city houses over the Easter School Break Week.  Rich is looking to tie into a strong network to receive potential houses to be considered for fix-up.  There is no cost to the homeowners who are accepted.  Rich can be reached at 766-9858 or at richwarn@rochester.rr.com.  Solicitations begin in October but I thought it might be a good idea to make a connection now so that we are clear on what the eligibility requirements are and are prepared to take advantage of this resource.  Rich will also be sending me his info and I will be sending that out via the SW Community Roundtable Updates.

Attention: Book Lovers
The Housing Committee is meeting weekly to identify code violations in order to “spruce-up” our community. Members have been using their own money for postage and supplies.
In order to generate cash, we have set up a display with gently used books and are asking for a donation of only $1.00. Please take a minute to stop at the office, 216 Thurston Road, Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00-2:30 to check new titles. We have a donation cup if you happen to be there for a meeting and want to take a book home.
We would also appreciate your donation of one or two books in good condition to add to our collection. Titles will change weekly.

That's wonderful Linda!  There are many elderly in the neighborhood on fixed incomes who could really use some help with maintenance issues like this one.  If a whole block were to pitch in, great things could happen.

Someone said that a block club worked to help people on a certain street who couldn't care for their property, like the elderly, etc.   Well, I hope to help at least one house family with the purchase of a new door in the next few months.....
