This group is for 19th Ward residents who are concerned about the plight of stray, feral, and abandoned cats in our neighborhood. It is our goal to live in a community where all cats are treated humanely and cats and humans live in harmony.

That is where most of our communication is happening right now. You may also contact us via the 19th Ward Community Association at 328-6571 to get on our email list.

19th Ward Community Cats was hard at work in 2015!!! In 2015, we were able to spay/neuter 287 free roaming cats in the 19th Ward as part of the City Kitty project. They were also vaccinated, and treated for fleas, worms, and parasites. That's 287 outdoor cats who've received vet care and will no longer be reproducing on our streets or be vulnerable to disease! Approximately 80 of those cats/kittens were placed for adoption with our City Kitty partner, Four-Legged Friends Animal Adoptions, Inc., and they're now in loving forever homes- off the streets entirely! Members of this group and colony caretakers volunteer their time and bear the financial burden for much of this work. If you'd like make a financial contribution to this group please take or mail your donation to the 19th Ward Community Association Office, 216 Thurston Road. I'm not quite sure how to use the sheet; do they offer some means of keeping the list current, or are the sheets just intended for people planning to do so? I wish I had time to take on a responsibility like that, but I have to be realistic -- I don't? Anyone else willing to take it on? It would be wonderful to have a cat census for the neighborhood.

That could be used to list the cats needing spay/neuter.

I just gave a presentation on our campus group's work with feral cats at RIT. (My slides are viewable at

There was a prof there who is on the Irondequoit Town Board, and she would like our campus cat group to present at one of their meetings. When I mentioned the 19th Ward group to her, she said she'd also like information about what this group is doing.

Comment by Heidi on June 10, 2009 at 9:42am: I would love to have a meeting! I recently caught two feral kittens, probably about six months or so old and both female. We decided to try to socialize the first one as she'd been so receptive to us when we fed her and, absolutely amazingly, she's adapted extremely well to being inside and in a home with other cats! The other cat I took to the clinic to get spayed. I was pretty sure she was pregnant, although when I saw her shortly before she was trapped, I began to wonder if she'd had her kittens and was just coming over for a quick bite. I hope not! Next on my radar is a young male. (They just keep coming, don't they?!) But I totally agree that some kind of education is needed. Do enough of our neighbors know about the City's low cost spay/neuter program that Marian mentioned?

Yes, it is time we met -- and time I got back into circulation. I got swamped with a big family project (with my husband's business) this spring and am only just emerging, tired but once more with a little time to spare! If we can make a list of people/cats needing spay/neuter services I can give it to the people at Habitat, who have offered to continue to try to fit our neighborhood cats into their schedule as quickly as possible. On that list we'll want to note which cats are adoptable and which are truly feral, since they go to different clinics.

As I come to look at my schedule more, it's still really tight. Maybe we should start compiling the list now, so that it doesn't need to wait for a meeting that might take some time yet to schedule. What will be the best way to post a list? Any ideas?

Comment by Robin Glenski on June 5, 2009 at 2:59pm: I am passing out flyers on Inglewood and Roxborough tomorrow to see if anyone has spotted Maci lately. Last spotted on Memorial day. A big change from two to three times daily! I have a large tiger that eats at my house but he/she is very friendly. I may work on a flyer about him as he interacts with the ferals and clearly is not. I would like to know if anyone owns him or if he needs a home.

A big congratulations to Sheri, Robyn and Kristi who saved a cute little 'feral' kitten, tamed it and are now in the process of finding it a 'regular' home.
"Sully" has been living with Sheri for 2 weeks now and was the smallest kitten in a litter delivered by "Maci". The other kittens (and Maci) are still 'in the wild' but Sully is getting EXCELLENT care and in the process of being placed in a home.
All of this work involved the efforts of the people named above along with neighbors on Inglewood and Roxborough. In the midst of trying to track down kittens, Sheri et. al. delivered flyers, knocked on doors, left phone numbers, etc. the result is that some great people helped out by calling, giving information about the kittens, etc
