19th Ward Community Cats

This group is for 19th Ward residents who are concerned about the plight of stray, feral, and abandoned cats in our neighborhood.  It is our goal to live in a community where all cats are treated humanely and cats and humans live in harmony.

Please don't litter! Spay and neuter!

Please check out our Facebook page:

That is where most of our communication is happening right now.  You may also contact us via the 19th Ward Community Association at 328-6571 to get on our email list.

19th Ward Community Cats was hard at work in 2015!!!  In 2015, we were able to spay/neuter 287 free roaming cats in the 19th Ward as part of the City Kitty project.  They were also vaccinated,  and treated for fleas, worms, and parasites.  That's 287 outdoor cats who've received vet care and will no longer be reproducing on our streets or be vulnerable to disease!  Approximately 80 of those cats/kittens were placed for adoption with our City Kitty partner, Four-Legged Friends Animal Adoptions, Inc., and they're now in loving forever homes- off the streets entirely!  Members of this group and colony caretakers volunteer their time and bear the financial burden for much of this work.  If you'd like make a financial contribution to this group please take or mail your donation to the 19th Ward Community Association Office, 216 Thurston Road.  Every dollar is spent on vet care for our community cats.  If you'd like to help in any other way, please let us know!  Thank you!!

Hi, Heidi and Inge both -- sorry about getting your names switched! Heidi figured it out anyhow, having realized we didn't get introduced at the meeting. Anyhow, it sounds like Shawn did get the message and things are heading in the right direction.

Sorry about the link not working. I have much to learn about how to best use this web site. I'll e-mail the document separately to those for whom I have contact information.

We won't have a bank account number for the PayPal account until the 19WCA has settled on which bank it wants to use. Their current bank's service leaves much to be desired AND it's raising fees . There should be no problem once that issue is settled since the Association has acted as a fiduciary for neighborhood groups in the past.

Check with Habitat for Cats at 234-2894 and their web site http://www.habitatforcats.com/ for help with socialized cats. I have two names, Larraine Van Blarcom and Allison Mayer, but I can't remember who works with ferals and who with socialized animals. Beyond that, I don't have any suggestions. New York State stopped its financial support effective August 1 of this year. The local shelters just have too many animals and too little funding to meet the demand.

No, it wasn't me since I've never done anything with Paypal (I thought it was Alice?) ... did speak with Shawn, though, who said it would be easy to add a link or button for contributions to Feral Cat group. Marian, do we have an account number I can relay to Shawn? And yes, like Inge, the link Marian posted does not work for me either. Also, I'd really like to find out the contact number for the socialized cat spay/neuter program through HFC. Just spoke with the young woman who took the young female I'd briefly fostered ... in addition to not qualifying for the low-cost program, she also found out that Verona Street (or the spay/neuter clinic) is booked until January! Suggestions??

Hi everyone,
Marian I believe it was Heidi who was go to check on the Pay Pal issue. I'm not at all familiar with Pay Pal.
October 25th be good for me also. I'm forward to meeting more people who are working with the feral cats in the 19th Ward.
Marian will there be popcorn with the movie? :-)
The link does not work for me. Anyone else have a problem?

Of the people who have responded, everyone has said the 25th will be best, so let's make it for Sunday, October 25, 2:00 pm at the 19th Ward Community Association Office, 216 Thurston Road. There will be coffee and tea available.

I bought a copy of "Effectively Managing Feral Cats," a two-DVD set from HSUS that I'll bring along. I haven't reviewed it yet so I don't know how long it runs, but I'll bring it so we can view all or part depending on the length. Also, below is a link that I hope will provide you all with a copy of the internet resources document I brought last time. If it doesn't work, let me know and I'll try another approach!

Alex and I will be out of town on Sunday the 18th but we/I could definitely do the 25th for another meeting. And Marian, could you please send me the list of links you shared with everyone last Sunday? Thanks SO much!

I look forward to meeting you, Bill! The better date for the meeting for me will be the 25th, by the way.

Hi. This is to everybody, and since I'm not good at doing computers (or windows or floors), I hope you all get this. Sheri, I think I mentioned on the Yahoo site that I have a have-a-heart trap. I've supported Habitat for Cats for years. My vet volunteers at the clinic. Thanks for what all of you do. I'm planning on going to that meeting Marian mentioned -- the one on Oct. 18th or 25th.

Bill,

I hate to disagree with a vet, but FIV is not that easy to spread. It has to be a blood-to-blood transmission (although some sources say saliva-to-blood is a possible vector). This means that Pewter would have to bite your other cats with an open sore in his mouth, or scratch them with an injured and bleeding paw. I have had an FIV+ cat in my household for 9 years, and he has not infected any of my other cats. Other than losing most of his teeth to gingivitis, he is in good health.

Of course I understand that it would be better for your peace of mind if Pewter got another home. I'm just offering my perspective and experience.
