19th Ward Community Cats

This group is for 19th Ward residents who are concerned about the plight of stray, feral, and abandoned cats in our neighborhood.  It is our goal to live in a community where all cats are treated humanely and cats and humans live in harmony.

Please don't litter! Spay and neuter!

Please check out our Facebook page:

http://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/19thWardCommunityCats/

That is where most of our communication is happening right now.  You may also contact us via the 19th Ward Community Association at 328-6571 to get on our email list.

19th Ward Community Cats was hard at work in 2015!!!  In 2015, we were able to spay/neuter 287 free roaming cats in the 19th Ward as part of the City Kitty project.  They were also vaccinated,  and treated for fleas, worms, and parasites.  That's 287 outdoor cats who've received vet care and will no longer be reproducing on our streets or be vulnerable to disease!  Approximately 80 of those cats/kittens were placed for adoption with our City Kitty partner, Four-Legged Friends Animal Adoptions, Inc., and they're now in loving forever homes- off the streets entirely!  Members of this group and colony caretakers volunteer their time and bear the financial burden for much of this work.  If you'd like make a financial contribution to this group please take or mail your donation to the 19th Ward Community Association Office, 216 Thurston Road.  Every dollar is spent on vet care for our community cats.  If you'd like to help in any other way, please let us know!  Thank you!!

Hi all. A male cat gone feral I was able to bring to my veterinarian for neutering and all the necessary vaccinations and tests. It turns out he has both the leukemia and FIV titers.
Albert and Princess (cats) have been my housemates and companions for years. My vet said that I would be putting both at high risk for contracting FIV. (Unlike feline leukemia, there is no vaccination.)
I am going ahead with the neutering and all the necessary medical stuff including treating an eye which at this point might be useless--obviously the result of a fight.
It took a very long time to gain Pewter's trust so that I could get him to the vet. He and Albert like each other. Pewter spent the night here. How I know his name is another story for another time. He is lovable and affectionate. If anybody knows someone or of someone who would like Pewter as an only cat, that would be great. Any advice would be much appreciated. Marian gave me some of the medical/technical aspects of this in addition to some questions to ask my vet.
This has never come up in the forty years I have lived with formerly homeless/stray cats. I did not know that feral cats were especially prone to getting the FIV titer, if not the disease itself.
Thanks, everybody!

I spoke to the Treasurer of the 19th Ward Community Association about creating a separate bank account for this group that could be linked to a PayPal account. The Association is in the middle of the 2010 budgeting process in preparation for the annual convention in November and is also shopping around for a new bank, so our timing is perfect as they can fold the Feral Cat Group into their plans. We should have better information within the next 4-6 weeks. I'll keep you updated.

Let's plan our next meeting for either Sunday, Oct. 18th or 25th at the Community Association office, 216 Thurston Road . Early afternoon seemed to work out well for a lot of people. Please let us know your preferences.

Hi Shawn (et al),

Actually, I think this page is doing great for us for now (though Inge will be in touch about whether it's possible to add a Paypal button for donations).

In the mean time, we had a great meeting yesterday -- we ended up moving to the back yard of the 19WCA office since there was a big party at Boulder. The Paypal button was one of the ideas that came up.

I or someone need write down a more detailed account of the meeting and who all was there, but overall, we decided that one way to pull together the funding and education components would be to see if we can raise money (Marian has a list of foundations that work with this, and we may get help from a suburban contact) to stage a large one-day clinic next spring for neighbors to get their pets fixed for free.

This would get a lot of neighborhood indoor/outdoor cats out of kitten production, give an opportunity to promote responsible cat care, and give us a leg up on developing this group, and its connections with the local organizations and/or individual vets that would help with the clinic event. We'll be having the next meeting soon (ater 10/15!) to check the idea out with everyone who was not at this meeting and start discussing the details further.

In the mean time, I've agreed to arrange a meeting with MacClurg Vivian to learn more about what information we will need (besides a clear idea of what we want to accomplish) for a "basic" grant proposal, so that when we meet next we can get started on delagating people to get that research done.

Some how I missed the posting for the meeting. I have so many emails coming and going from L19, it easy to miss things. I'll do a better job reading everything next time!

On another note, Alice had asked me about adding a WIKI feature for this group. I am still trying to figure it out. Unfortunately, there is not currently a feature or widget that I can just plugin. It's looking like it wil have to be an external site that is linked together with Location19. It's just taking me sometime to find the one that works the best, and is free!

It's open to anyone interested or concerned about feral cats in the 19th Ward -- the more the merrier!

Hello everyone,
Is the gathering on Sunday open to anyone feeding feral cats in the 19th Ward?

Looking forward to hearing what y'all talk about. we'll be in VT for 10 days - don't worry though, we have someone staying at the house and part of what we're paying him to do is to feed the 10 or so ferals who feast day and night in our back yard!

I figured out I can share the presentation as a Google doc. I'll also bring a printout of the slides.
