This group is for 19th Ward residents who are concerned about the plight of stray, feral, and abandoned cats in our neighborhood. It is our goal to live in a community where all cats are treated humanely and cats and humans live in harmony.

19th Ward Community Cats was hard at work in 2015!!! In 2015, we were able to spay/neuter 287 free roaming cats in the 19th Ward as part of the City Kitty project. They were also vaccinated, and treated for fleas, worms, and parasites. That's 287 outdoor cats who've received vet care and will no longer be reproducing on our streets or be vulnerable to disease! Approximately 80 of those cats/kittens were placed for adoption with our City Kitty partner, Four-Legged Friends Animal Adoptions, Inc., and they're now in loving forever homes- off the streets entirely! Members of this group and colony caretakers volunteer their time and bear the financial burden for much of this work. If you'd like make a financial contribution to this group please take or mail your donation to the 19th Ward Community Association Office, 216 Thurston Road. Every dollar is spent on vet care for our community cats. If you'd like to help in any other way, please let us know! Thank you!!

Actually, we had a meeting this weekend of the (newly named this weekend) 19th Ward Community Cats group, and discussed the idea of building the group, and spay/neuter awareness in the neighborhood, by organizing a one-day free clinic in the 19th Ward. This will help us build local fundraising connections to raise the money for it, collect "hard data" for future grant proposals by keeping track of how many people get turned away (assuming we promote it well). Our first step, we decided, is to contact Habitat, and I've just e-mailed Laraine about it. Our next meeting will be Sunday, 11/15 at 2pm at the 19th Ward community Association office on Thurston Road (just below Arnett, but I don't know the exact address).

I uploaded some photos to the feral cat album so you can see what the finished product looks like. These houses should provide excellent shelter this coming winter.

If you were to call and mention that we referred you and explain that you're a student with limited resources Dr. Gschrey might be able to give you a reduced rate. No guarantees since times are tight for everyone, and their business may be slacking off because one of the areas people tend to economize is with vet bills.

Our older cat with those symptoms had kidney failure, which is treatable to a degree to improve her quality of life. Good luck.

Comment by Inge Mallory on October 17, 2009 at 10:14pm: Do you mean Gates Vetrenarey Hospital? They are across from Wegman's Offices on Brooks. I don't know how expensive they are. Another is Caring for Cats on Edgemere Dr and they are wonderful but I don't know how reasonable they are either. They treat many of the feral cats for Pet Adoptiion Network. The group I work with.

Comment by Shawn on October 17, 2009 at 9:34pm: Hi All, I have a question about a good Vet for Cats. I think our older cat Samantha, has HyperThyroidism. She has lost weight, and has an increased appetite. From what I have read these are classic symptoms of HyperThyroidism. We noticed that she would not like to eat her hard food, which is all we have ever feed her. We thought maybe she was just getting old, and it was hard for her to eat. So we switched her to canned food (which she LOVES) but has not gained any weight. She is 11 years old, and is in good health otherwise. But I want to have her checked out (and not cost a fortune). I remember someone mentioning a Vet nears Brooks and Chili?

Comment by Alice Carli on October 8, 2009 at 10:56am: Oh -- Marian, the link did work for me, so I think it probably has to do with the browserwe use at our end. I've heard that Internet Explorer is getting gradually worse with this kind of thing, so that might be it; I used Firefox.
