19th Ward Community Cats

This group is for 19th Ward residents who are concerned about the plight of stray, feral, and abandoned cats in our neighborhood.  It is our goal to live in a community where all cats are treated humanely and cats and humans live in harmony.

Please don't litter! Spay and neuter!

Please check out our Facebook page:

That is where most of our communication is happening right now.  You may also contact us via the 19th Ward Community Association at 328-6571 to get on our email list.

19th Ward Community Cats was hard at work in 2015!!!  In 2015, we were able to spay/neuter 287 free roaming cats in the 19th Ward as part of the City Kitty project.  They were also vaccinated,  and treated for fleas, worms, and parasites.  That's 287 outdoor cats who've received vet care and will no longer be reproducing on our streets or be vulnerable to disease!  Approximately 80 of those cats/kittens were placed for adoption with our City Kitty partner, Four-Legged Friends Animal Adoptions, Inc., and they're now in loving forever homes- off the streets entirely!  Members of this group and colony caretakers volunteer their time and bear the financial burden for much of this work.  If you'd like make a financial contribution to this group please take or mail your donation to the 19th Ward Community Association Office, 216 Thurston Road.  Every dollar is spent on vet care for our community cats.  If you'd like to help in any other way, please let us know!  Thank you!!

Hi everyone. I'm Lisa and have lived with my husband Steve at the corner of Ravenwood and Woodbine for about 20 years.

We have three cats of our own, but because of our cat-friendly yard (lots of catmint and catnip plants) we have an ongoing feral cat problem; every year or so a new feral cat moves into the yard and we either have to trap and/or get him neutered and release him. (They always seem to be intact males.)

We have a humane trap, so if you need one, let me know via email and you can borrow it. I'd be interested in hearing other people's ideas about how to deal with these cats. I tend to feed them (outdoors) but that leads to intense attachment, and our 3 cats can't handle the spraying and competition.

Dr. Mary Lummis, cat vet extraordinaire who lives in the 19th Ward, now works at the Verona St facility. (She used to be our vet but has gone into public practice, I hear). She has been very helpful in dealing with the ferals (has neutered them for low cost, for example). I will contact her and tell her about this group.

Am I an idiot or what? Where is the album and can I add photos from the Trafalgar/Aberdeen Street "gang"?
Comment by Margy Meath on June 11, 2009 at 11:28am
OK- so it looks like I will need to drag photos INTO the album once anyone uploads them to the 'general' photo page. Uploading is easy. So, for now until someone wants to do this differently please do the following:
add your photo/description related to Feral Cats to the 'photos' page. Write a brief comment in THIS group alerting me (or send me an email if you'd rather). I will drag your photo into the album. The good news is that the album can be SEEN by anyone.
Hope that this is helpful.....
and, i continue my mantra "i am not a cat person, i am not a cat person...." :-)

Sheri, i was able to 'drag' your photos into the album..... I don't know if you would have been able to do the same. I think that the process of getting into 'albums' requires 2 steps - 1)upload the photo and 2) drag photo into album. What I am NOT sure of is whether step #2 has to be done by the album 'owner' - if so, I am willing to do this as long as people alert me (via the group) that there is a photo to be added. If you can 'play' a little more with this function we can get more clear about what's possible and try to work around any barriers.

All right! How did you do it? (I couldn't figure it out... I could start an album with one photo but not get others into it easily.)

I just created an album titiled Feral Cats that can be accessed on the 'main page' of location 19. I was able to upload a photo of Marley and add a brief description of her. If some others could try to do this we might find it's easier than it seems. let me know if it works.

Hmm, so far the album idea is not working; it's too cumbersome to get photos added, and the information needed is too hard to get at. Well, it was a thought! I'll see if Shawn has any ideas for how it could be made to work here.

Alice, go ahead and start up your idea. We can build on it as we go along. The most important thing is to keep some momentum going.

Remember that we can make connections with the 150 members of the 19th Ward Yahoo! list. I wouldn't be surprised if many of them are unaware of Location 19. Also, we can keep a presence in "Update 19," the 19th Ward Community Association's paper newsletter, which I hope will be posted regularly on their web site.

If you distribute information door-to-door, please remember to document what you've done: what, where, how, etc. Include the results of any discussions you have with neighbors so we can start getting a feel for how large the problem is. At some point, we'll need that information for grant applications.

Come to think of it, one way we could do this would be to make a "19th Ward feral cats" photo album on this site. Most of the "photos" would be be generic (I can experiment copying and pasting our cat group photo, to see if it takes it, if that's all right?) with the actual info being in the photo captions. These would need to include street address and a person's name, but could also include "needs feral neuter" "needs adoptable neuter" "my pet" (with a photo for use if it gets lost) "lovely neutered adoptable needs home" (that could have a nice photo...). So that we could advertise it as a place for people in the ward to "register" their cats -- both pets and ferals they care for, as well as those they are looking to find homes for (maybe that should be a separate album).

This might work, since it doesn't require any one person to keep track of them all. The fact that the listings are automatically dated will also help to show how up to date the listings are.

What do you all think? Shall I try adding, say, albums for "feral needs neutered" and "adoptable needs home"?
