19th Ward Community Cats

This group is for 19th Ward residents who are concerned about the plight of stray, feral, and abandoned cats in our neighborhood.  It is our goal to live in a community where all cats are treated humanely and cats and humans live in harmony.

Please don't litter! Spay and neuter!

Please check out our Facebook page:

That is where most of our communication is happening right now.  You may also contact us via the 19th Ward Community Association at 328-6571 to get on our email list.

19th Ward Community Cats was hard at work in 2015!!!  In 2015, we were able to spay/neuter 287 free roaming cats in the 19th Ward as part of the City Kitty project.  They were also vaccinated,  and treated for fleas, worms, and parasites.  That's 287 outdoor cats who've received vet care and will no longer be reproducing on our streets or be vulnerable to disease!  Approximately 80 of those cats/kittens were placed for adoption with our City Kitty partner, Four-Legged Friends Animal Adoptions, Inc., and they're now in loving forever homes- off the streets entirely!  Members of this group and colony caretakers volunteer their time and bear the financial burden for much of this work.  If you'd like make a financial contribution to this group please take or mail your donation to the 19th Ward Community Association Office, 216 Thurston Road.  Every dollar is spent on vet care for our community cats.  If you'd like to help in any other way, please let us know!  Thank you!!

Hi all,

I've been accepted to the citizens' police academy, so I won't be able to make the  meeting on Oct. 18.

I have an idea for a fund raiser - a monthly calendar with photos of some of the ferals we've TNR'd.    One source is Cafe Press, but there are probably others.

I just made a comment, but I dunno where it went.  I'll be at the meeting unless the citizen's police academy is in session (and I am accepted).

Off Westfield Street alone, my husband and I rescued 14 cats of varying ages, 6 of which still live with us, the rest of which we adopted out (one was even a FeLV positive male). Plus, we TNRed 2 that we were forced to release as they were far too feral to handle. Even though we no longer live on Westfield, we are concerned about the sheer number of cats roaming freely in that area.  Even with our impact, which I feel was a fairly sizeable one, there are so many left in the cold.  Should you guys ever need help, please let me know.  I own a trap that I'd be happy to lend out, and have contacts in various rescues that might possibly be able to help adopt cats out when they are caught.  Personally, having 16 cats, I can't possibly foster any more animals, but I'd be glad to help in other ways when I can. This cycle of apathy and ignorance needs to end.

That's wonderful news, Sheri.  He's such a cutie!

Do we have a date yet for the next meeting?  We have enough of a balance in the 19WCA Feral Cat fund that we can buy a few traps to keep on hand and reimburse the spay/neuters that have been done this summer.  Also, we should write up a summary of our accomplishments  so people know what their donations have been used for.

Sheri,

I am with you 100%. It is sad how disposable cats are to so many people.

I feel like I'm fighting a loosing battle and I know most of the people connected with this group is feeling the same way.

The city, as long as I've lived in the 19th Ward, has done nothing to help with the animal population until after the births. Giving away animals at the shelter at no cost is Not the answer. It does not address the on going issue of pets continuing to reproduce and it places zero value on the animals.

I thought putting unstamped mail in someone's box was a federal violation, hence my thought of slipping it into her door. One way or another though, I do want to make sure she knows there are low cost options available.

Perhaps you should slip that paper in her mail box Kira. At least that way you know you have done something to help. I feel for that poor kitty. How sad that she has to continue to have kittens that may end up being discarded..

Jes, That thought has occurred to me that he just got out but still wouldn't you be searching the moment you noticed he was missing?

One of my ferals was not with her cat buddy one day and didn't show for breakfast the next either. I searched the neighborhood and asked all around if anyone had seen her the first day she didn't come to eat Sadly :-( she never turned up.

I hear you on the "there are a LOT of folks there who just aren't getting it." My next door neighbor has a calico who has already had one litter of kittens (although I never saw them - she kept her indoors during the birth and presumably found homes for them) and is now visibly pregnant again. I see her outdoors from time to time, although sometimes the neighbor sends her kids out to catch her and bring her back inside. I've thought about slipping a printout of the website for Rochester Animal Services' Low Income Spay/neuter program into her front door, but I'm not sure she'd follow up on it.
