Salmonella is a bacterial infection that can affect both animals and humans.  Symptoms may include decreased appetite, diarrhea, fever, vomiting, and abdominal pain.  Pets and people who carry the disease can infect others, so if you or your pet are experiencing symptoms and you have purchased and used the affected dog food, take all due precaution and see a doctor and/or veterinarian.  You can prevent spread of the disease by washing your hands thoroughly and following physician instructions.

If you have purchased one of the recalled pet foods, you should immediately stop feeding it to your animals, and contact the place you purchased the pet food from - refunds may be available. The CDC also has information on documented salmonella contamination.

I wanted to post this information on coyotes from the Humane Society of the United States.  My husband has seen at least one on the canal path, and we can be sure that if he saw one, there are others. The canal path functions as a highway through the city for them.  You may not be aware that many "lost" pets have actually fallen victim to coyotes, who have no trouble doing in a cat or a domestic dog the size of a beagle.  It's best to keep cats indoors and small-ish dogs constantly monitored when they are outside.  A fenced-in yard is no deterrent to a coyote.

Here's a picture of four kittens in need of fostering from a colony we're working on now.  The kittens are in a box on the porch near the door so mom is tolerant of some people traffic.  Mom can be touched by the caretaker and is tolerating the caretaker handling the kittens.  If it helps a potential foster to know... mom could be returned to the colony after the kittens are weaned (in the event that mom does not socialize completely).  Mom is a gorgeous tortie (tortoise shell) and two of the kittens (top and left of the photo) appear to be tortie as well. 

Please respond if you can help by fostering or donating to cover some of the costs of feeding and spay/neuter when they're old enough.

Bill Nichthauser and I took three to Habitat this morning; one to County Line Animal Hospital this afternoon!  Mama cat didn't cooperate by entering the trap until 1:00pm, so we ended up taking her out to Wayne County this afternoon after we picked up the first three from Habitat. She'll stay overnight and be spayed tomorrow, which means another excursion in the countryside. But we're not complaining. She was pregnant. Judy Neumann did all the phone work to make it happen on very short notice.

There appears to be an increase of, lost or not previously seen around outside, cats lately.  It's a pretty cat. I have a foster who could be his twin!

Hi all,

Just wanted to let everyone know (those who haven't been in on one or another spate of activity!) that we've been getting a lot of response to the News 8 story, with several people contacting us through the web site. Meanwhile, I took a workshop involving Google Maps yesterday, and am ready to get a Cat Map back up on the web site. It could be useful in a lot of ways, but I'm thinking to start with it might be good to have on it Colonies marked with green flags, red flags for lost cats, yellow flags for TNR needed, and perhaps blue flags for people not maintaining colonies but able to help and advise. What do others think? And what sort of information should (and should not) be on the map. I'd like a quick visual way for people "in the know" to tell who lives nearby someone who needs help, without leaving contact info out where it shouldn't be. Let me know what you think.

I received a "game" camera for my birthday and mounted it near my feral feeding station. Seven (!) new-to-me cats have been visiting and had their pictures taken.  None of them show a left ear-tip to indicate they've been TNR'd.  Their portraits are posted on the main page of this site.  Since these guys only come at night, these photos are in the infrared so their colors don't show and their eyes are glowing.

If you recognize any of them as someone's pet, please let me know.  Otherwise, they'll be visiting Habitat for Cats for a snip and tip.
