I just got back from meeting with officer Kristen Runyon, the Southwest Neighborhood Service Center Crime Prevention Officer. We got together to talk about how Location19 and the NSC can work together to promote the creation of neighborhood block clubs. And I think we came up with, what seems like a great strategy.

I am going to design a flyer to peak the interest of 19th Ward residents about starting a block club. Then the Kris and the NSC would send out a police van to each street. There they would hand out information and answer questions about starting a block club. As part of that event, Kris will promote a Neighborhood block club training seminar to be held a month out.

So we get then interested. Get folks informed, and then get them educated.

More to come!

Block clubs have tended to spring up in response to a crisis and then disappear, and a methodical approach to encouraging them is wonderful news. Ofc. Kristin Runyon has taken the lead to pump some new life into PAC-TAC and now is turning her attention to this. Atta-girrl, Kris!
Kris is an amazing women! I think with here drive and the communities involvement, we can make things happen!
I would be very interested in joining (or starting) a block club. Is that akin to neighborhood watch, or what was the orange hat patrol in DC, where neighbors would essentially walk the street in the evening as a crime prevention tool? Currently, I walk my pooch daily and am trying to be consistent about taking a garbage bag to pick up garbage on my walks. I just started a new job (finally!) so I am not as consistent, but I do want to try and do it daily. I have seen used condoms along Genesse Park rd. two days in a row now.
Hi Kendre,

I will posting more information about starting or joining a block club soon. It is akin to neighborhood watch. A group can be very organized and have regular monthly meetings, or it can be you and a group of folks who walk their dogs together on a daily basis. The idea is to get people connected and talking with one another on the street you live on. When it comes to crime prevention, communication is key.
Kendre,

I see from your profile that you live on Roxborough. Nora Hebert (sp?) lives on your street and was active in trying to start a block club a few years ago..... I don't know what number on Roxborough she is but I think that she lives close to the Thurston end and I know that she has been interested in crime watch/prevention, etc.

On a different note, finding used condoms on Genesee Park Blvd is pretty disgusting! This is the 2nd thing i've heard in the past week that leads me to believe that we have some prostitution occurring in our neighborhood- ugh!
Used condoms littering the street is a public health hazard. They're first cousins to medical waste. I haven't seen one myself, but if I ever do, I plan to notify the city and county health agencies. They probably won't care, but I'll do it anyway.
There will be a Block Club Task Force meeting tomorrow, Friday, 9/11, at 9:30 a.m. at the NSC office. I will be sure to copy in Kris Runyon on these activities as this group, initiated by David Hawkes, is specifically about supporting and creating more block clubs. We know that grassroots communication is the way to go AND we are committed to building on community assets! On the agenda tomorrow will be a brief overview on all of the significant history associated with SouthWest Rochester (did you know that Susan B. Anthony actually "had tea" with Frederick Douglass in the area of Brooks Ave & Genesee Park Blvd where she spent her years BEFORE moving to the W. Main area?).
I am curious about this task force meeting in terms of who is involved and what the focus will be. Can you share some additional details??
I am curious as well. It sounds like there are several groups working towards the same goal. I contacted Kris, because I did not see, or hear of anything like this happening in the 19th Ward. It maybe that the Block Club Task Force is more of a broad South West area effort, whereas mine is for the 19th Ward. But I would love to work togther, and build some momentum behind block clubs.
