I'm sure that some of you have seen the news of the horrific crash on Chili Ave last night..... I was one of the primary witnesses to the event as it occurred right in front of me (40 or so feet) when i was driving home from being away for a few days. I have seen a lot of horrible things in my life- this crash was the most violent i have ever witnessed. the car was in flames within seconds of impact and there was nothing that i could do to help possible occupants except call 911 and then direct traffic to keep other cars safe from the fire. I think it's very likely that the occupants of the vehicle died immediately and I hope that this fact will bring some comfort to the victims family's and loved ones.

Because i was witness and because i was in the middle of the crime scene i ended up being there for almost 2 hours before the investigator was able to interview me. From what i saw the vehicle was leaving our neighborhood at a very high rate of speed and was driving with no lights on. The driver must have lost control as he literally 'flew' over the median, crossing to the other side of Chili and directly into the concrete wall.

The police, fire department and ambulance were on the scene very quickly and did a good job of controlling the scene, putting out the fire, etc. I spoke with several officers who were clearly upset by the what they saw. They did a good job of keeping curious onlookers at a safe distance, etc.

Life is fragile - please drive safely!

Thanks Jodi and Dan-
I drove by again late last night on my way home from babysitting my nieces. I was aware that people were gathered earlier in the day (due to the traffic) but couldn't stop. When I drove by last night there were 4 men near the scene and they were visibly distraught so I stopped. I spoke with one man whose brother was killed in the accident. I let him know that I had been there and that i was sorry for his loss - he wasn't able to talk much but did ask me if I had seen any movement in the vehicle after the crash. I told him that I had not and that I was fairly certain saying that the people in the car died instantly and did not suffer beyond the initial crash. He seemed just a little relieved to hear that piece of information.

Thanks for providing a post. It sounds horrible. Yet another loss of life in our neighborhood in two weeks. I was driving back from Buffalo yesterday, and came across a memorial service or gathering at the scene. It would have been nice to have more information on it, as I and I am sure others would have liked to have been there to show support for the families.

Margy, I can not imagine how you must have felt after witnessing something so horrific. I would imagine that the image of that crash is something that will always be with you. I hope that talking about it here is theraputic for you.
