Maybe it's just me or maybe I'm late to the game, but I think I'm seeing a bad trend around my neck of the 19th ward. That is the turning of good single family homes into apartments. A former long time neighbor and friend in the house behind ours put her home up for sale. Gone for cash in 4 days. Guess what will happen next. This is a very nice, well maintained single family home. As the UR expands it's student population some very good single family homes around the Brooks avenue area are being snatched up and turned into rental property. The other down side in my opinion is rents suddenly sky rocket on these new "rental" properties. Prices that many locals can't afford.
I'm certainly not a hater of rental property. My wife and I stared out in rental property as newly weds. I don't like to see good single family homes turned into rental property.
Maybe it's our personal experience around the Brooks / Evangeline area. Hopefully I'm not paranoid. But I know what I see and what I see isn't good right now. Certainly not for my little neck of the 19th ward.
Comment
Actually the homes r being turned into rooming houses which net more bang for the buck! AND right n our faces. Lot of transformations on this side of Genesee too.
Thanks for the input Margy. I'm sure the city could prevent some of this if we let them know with a loud voice we don't like what's happening. I will bring this up to the Housing Committee. They are probably aware already. I can't be involved in everything but I can sure get involved in this one.
The City SHOULD be able to prevent some of this from happening. Depending on how the homes are zoned they should not be turned into apartments. Very few 19th ward houses are adequate for apartments. You may want to bring this to the attention of the 19th Ward Housing Committee. I'm not sure if this is part of what they're currently focused on but they have been active and are committed to improving housing issues in our community. If you see a single family home turned into an apartment i'd also let the NSC code enforcement people know as this is something they should be able to track and, possibly, prevent.
