Thurston Crime ?

Anyone have info on Thurston at Enterprise blocked off early Sunday morning?  Police blocked road off, put up crime scene tape, in front of Thurston Bar and Grill across to former Sensuous Satiables store.  Cleared at 9:30 AM.   Crime tech unit was there, with police cars blocking road.  Also fire department, so it may have been a house issue.  No idea, as I was on my way to work and could not stop to check.  The street was closed for at least an hour prior to that.

Gas supplier Solicitor - Caution

Be aware that a solicitor is in the neighborhood, using some questionable practices.   He appears to be licensed to solicit, (? had ID badge) but uses someone elses RGE bill with a message on it saying they will ask the customer for more money since he has not had any meter readings.  So they were going to raise his rate.  The solicitor was implying my rate could be raised, but if I switched to his company, they would save me money.  The bill is questionable in that there is no reason the…

Mr. Hunt Retires from Hardware

There was a great story in the Business section of Saturday's D&C about Mr. Hunt and his retirement.  Here's a link if you missed it:  http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20111001/BUSINESS/110010316/Hunt-s-Hardware-passes-next-generation?odyssey=tab|topnews|img|Business

WiFi

There have been recent posts in a number of groups about WiFi.  What is that?  Suggestions to get the U of R to help fund, or to have the City help.  What is it, and what are the benefits?

Thurston Rd. Street Fair

The Treasure Tour event held by the Thurston-Brooks Merchants group and co-sponsored by the 19th Ward Community Association, with help from the CDC, was a great positive step forward in bringing some life back into the area.  Of course, the weather did not hurt!  This is the kind of collaboration the neighborhood needs.  It was a first effort, but if repeated every year, people will look for it and more will participate.  What a great kick-off!

It was also perfect timing to introduce…

Lights on at Night Prevent Crime

Here's a note I ran by Crime Prevention Officer Kristin R., who urged me to post it, after I sent it to my block club members, E2, for Enterprise and Ellicott Streets.

Neighbors,

As a block club, we have been trying to keep porch lights on at night to help deter crime.  Lighting is a big help in…

Congratulations to Mayor Duffy!

Congratulations on the Cuomo/Duffy win in the elections! Was there any question who the best candidates were? No!

Let's hope Lt. Gov.-elect Duffy can fulfill promises to help upstate NY and Rochester rebuild and reach some of its potential. I look forward to seeing him work to do more for Rochester in his new position than he could as Mayor, as has been said. It was heartening to hear Cuomo reiterate this thought tonight after the election. We can only…

Porch Lights At Night

If you are willing, please turn on your porch lights at night. One resident on Enterprise, and I am sure there may be more, leaves the house to go to work at 11:30 PM. Many times I am just getting home from work then. There are only three street lights on our street area, and it is quite dark, so this would help. It is also known that lighting helps prevent crime, so a good thing for you as well. This was a direct request about lighting from a neighbor, so see if you can help. With Daylight…

Coincidence on Book Review in TIME

With talk around the Ward of block clubs, corner cookouts, and neighborhood problems, I was amazed to read this review today in the current issue of TIME magazine. (CAPS are mine for emphasis.)

"In the Neighborhood: The Search for Community on an American Street, One Sleepover at a Time.

What would you say if your 50-year-old neighbor asked to spend the night at your house? You might be inclined to call the police. You'd almost certainly think he was a…

Spring Hot Dog Corner Cookout

We had great success last year with Corner Cookouts, and I would like to see them continue in the coming season. We are in planning stage to have at least three in the 19th Ward. The first one will be in the City- owned lot at the corner of Thurston across from Thurston Garage, at Thurston and Midvale.

These are a neighborhood reach-out to show that people who live here care, and want to…

Public Safety Committee Meeting Minutes, 1-6-10

Minutes by Ofc. Kristin Runyon

Meeting was attended by CPO Runyon, Lt. Dearcop, Commander Ciminelli, and seven concerned members of the community. We started with introductions and did a brief recap of last month’s meeting where we divided up the chores for National Night Out, assigning most to John Borek as he was not present to refuse.

We first discussed some recent problems:

Stolen Cars. Many of you may remember my shock and anger over the summer when the stats showed that… Continue

Neighborhood Alert - Burglaries

From Crime Prevention Officer Kristin Runyon: We have had burglaries surrounding Brooks Ave area. Mostly contained by Spruce to Ellicott, Thurston to Millbanks. There were seven daytime burglaries in the last two weeks. Most have been forced entry so there should be some noise. Some had two suspects, some mentioned a small white car possibly involved.

Please be extra vigilant and watch out for neighbors. Call in anyone and anything suspicious to 911.

Make sure "stay at… Continue

Alert... Watch Neighborhood

I received a phone call last night about 11 pm from unknown stating that she would blow up my house, and kill me. This was reported to the phone company, who traced the call, and they said to call 311. An officer answered and followed through, but there is no resolution as yet. The call was traced, the phone company woudl not provide the infomation to me to share with police. There has been no problem as yet. Please be vigilant. I think this was an error on her part, calling a wrong number. But… Continue

Shooting on Thurston by Enterprise

I tried using Twitter but can't seem to figure out how to post. I called in to 911 about 12:45
AM with six shots fired, near the corner of Thurston and Enterprise. Across or by the bars on Thurston, I believe. Cops are still there. My street is blocked off with tape. Not a good sign.

Robbery at 80 Enterprise

I had a door bell ring from the police last night at 4 AM, as the new neighbors across the street had been robbed. I was still on my computer. I had not seen anything, but when I went out, the street was full of police. They said there was a robbery as the people walked from their car in the driveway to the front door. The robbers came from Thurston Rd.

Front Yard Gardens

Great Idea! Shawn, drove by your street the other day, And thought we should all plant front yard gardens. Why have lawn when you can have flowers? Good source is Michael Warren Thomas on Trafalgar St., whose whole front yard is NOT GRASS. Take advantage of what little space we have to garden!

I have been putting in grasses, like blue fescue, wheatgrass, and another, Carl F.If anyone wants suggestions, a great catalog is http://www.highcountrygardens.com/

Martuciellos Bread

For anyone who shops at Wegmans on Lyell Avenue, do stop in across the street at Martuciellos. They have great bread, wonderful pastries, excellent pizzas, including many vegetarian, and calzones. This is a true old-time Italian shop that you must try. They also have a grill for eating in, and their hamburgers on the round roll are out of this world! You must try, and you will never visit McD's again! I know this isn't in the Ward, but if you venture that way, it is truly a wonderful… Continue
