I drive on Thurston every day, sometimes several times and decided today that I need to avoid it for a while. It depresses me! Aside from the Presbyterian Home and Hunts there are no signs of the holidays on Thurston. The Post Office does have some Christmas and Hanukah stamps for sale, but the area in front of the post office is filled with litter and trash. Likewise, the rest of Thurston (from Marlborugh to Brooks) is FILLED with litter- bottles, paper plates, newspapers, drug baggies, napkins, food containers, etc. The blue 'row houses' are as bad as they've ever been - filled with trash. Where does all of this garbage come from and what will it take to change it!?

The City has an online complaint form for just this sort of thing - the trash, not the lack of Christmas spirit.

Go to http://www.cityofrochester.gov/article.aspx?ekfrm=8589938202 and fill out the form. You might print a couple of copies - one to drop off in person at the NSC office, 923 Genesee Street, and one to keep for yourself.

There ARE fines in place for not keeping the areas in front of properties clean. Make your voice heard in the right place, demand that codes be enforced, and keep a paper trail.

I feel the same Margy, I can't go down that street for the same reasons. I take Genesee Blvd. My opinion is, if the Merchant's on Thurston want me their, it is their responsibility to make it inviting, and necessary. As I've said before, the only things there for me is Hunt's and maybe LJ's when I'm not on a diet (which I am at the moment, because my thighs have dictated so). LOL. Seems backwards that we talk of the "neighbors" being visibile on Thurston et., all. No, the merchants and the landlords need to do that - or the city needs to light a fire under their butts - or the city needs to take the same serious stances with this part of town, as it does others. I am VERY VISIBLE in front of my house. That's my resonsbility. I take care of it, I make my yard nice, I keep it up. I can't handle that and Thurston as well. Oh well.... down boy, down!

Having worked for a bar on University I have to say that the new owner took a very serious manner in terms of keeping the outside of the bar clean and somewhat presentable as he was concerned the impact of his business would have on his neighbors. Their association would not tolerate it and would be on his back if he didn't. But he simply chose to be a good neighbor.

I am always AMAZED at the amount of trash. And I am tired of the "it's that time of year" Well I don't have that amount (or really any) trash in front of my house. And the last several weeks Anthony and I have walked down Park and East to the Eastman Theater with friends, and guess what? No Trash! Even on East Ave, out front of all the bars. It is going to take REAL FINES to get things to change. Money makes things happen.
