Driving down Thurston this evening was yet another disappointing experience. It is again/still filled with litter. THe 'clubs' were hopping with illegally parked cars. LOTS of people just hanging out.... I noticed yet another 'corner store'. But, the highlight of what's new on Thurston is a CASKET STORE!

I don't believe that i have ever seen a casket store before - and I find it strangely ironic that in the midst of our need of good eating places, a florist shop, a bakery, a gift shop, a coffee shop, etc we instead have a casket store.

Mark, do you know anything about this alternate signage issue?? I sure hope that the city has not put any of my tax dollars into funding any of these signs. they are an absolute eye sore!
So much for all of the wasted time at the 'visioning' events for Thurston- I only attended 2 of those meetings (i think that there were 3) but I am quite certain that neon signs were NOT mentioned as one of the things on the 'community's' wish list!

Oh my God! I drove up Thurston today and noticed the neon is creeping down this street! I think it is funded by the City.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the signs that were up in buildings on Thurston a little while ago about applications to the Zoning Board about use of alternative signage? Notice a lot of green neon along Chili also. John DeMott may be a source of information on this.

Interesting point Sheri re: the ugliness of the signs..... i just did a quick check of city code and it says the following:(10) Neon window signs may be permitted in cases where they are compatible with the building's use, historic and/or architectural character I'm thinking that the historical nature of our neighborhood and our 1920's architecture is NOT compatible with neon! The code lists a number of other things related to signs - I am guessing that many of our businesses are NOT in compliance with the code.......
I have an email into Adam McFadden re: the status of Thurston Street watch. If he responds I will ask him about the code issues as well.

Are you kidding? Of course we have need of a casket store on Thurston. Just look at all the shootings over the past few years. (In case anyone wonders, yes, this is sarcastic.)

Oh my stars!!! I've been in such need of a new casket for ages!!!!! To think there is a Casket Store only a few short steps from my home just brings a tear to my eye!
