Our Neighborhood Merchants

The objective of this group is to introduce residents of the SW Quadrant to the businesses in their community with the hope that if they are more aware of them they will patronize them more.  We also want to encourage business owners to adapt the the goods and services they offer to serve the needs of a broadened clientele.

How to use the group.

We hope that business owners and prospective customers will join Location19 and this group so that they can get to know one-another better.  Either through posts in discussions or as private Location19 mail messages, customers can communicate with the merchants to let them know what they would patronize their establishment for if the products or service were offered and to give constructive feedback on problems they may have encounter.

The exact structure of this group will probably evolve as we test things out.  For now I think, we should try starting a discussion in this group's Discussion Forum for each establishment.  That will allow the customers and merchant to have a public conversation using the "Reply" feature.  Mark Sweetland and I visited several stores with the objective of getting a feel for the establishments and the merchants.  We'll post that information as time allows.  I would encourage merchants to add to their story so the neighborhood gets to know them better.  If a locatgion19 member visits an establishment that we have not yet started a discussion for, you are encouraged to start a discussion yourself.

Remember that anyone can read what gets posted.  For information exchanges that are best done privately you can use Send a Message  which you can find on any members page under their picture.  As discussions get added for various establishments, I will put together index pages to make locating information easy.  Those will appear to the right of this box.

General discussions can of course also be started to address issues that affect multiple establishments.

2014 will mark the 100th anniversary of Hunt's Hardware on Thurston Road and five generations of the Hunt family at the store. Not only are they an institution on Thurston Road, they're THE place to go for advice and materials for fixing up your older house. You just won't find their kind of expertise at Home Depot or Lowes. Like all small businesses, they're struggling against the big box stores. They need our support. When you need paint, hardware, tools, or cleaning supplies, think of Hunt's first.

- from the Arnett Block Association

The new owners of the Arnett at the corner of Arnett and Warwick will be starting a restaurant there. Their target opening date is May 23 and they will be open from 6 am to 2 pm. The grand opening will be May 25th.  We are very pleased to have them in our neighborhood and welcome their new restaurant. Please plan to give them some business!!!

TAKE IN THE 2013  PHILADELPHIA FLOWER SHOW WITH MICHAEL WARREN THOMAS

Michael is the City Horticulturalist and a long-time resident of the 19th Ward who volunteers tirelessly in the neighborhood.  He hosts an annual trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show and Longwood Gardens that is not to be missed if you love gardening.  Details follow.

The 2013 Philly Flower Show
highlights Great Britain!

See the largest annual indoor flower show in the world, and the premier horticultural display garden in the United States - Longwood Gardens

March 6-7 (Wed.-Thurs.) and March 9-10 (Sat.-Sun.)

The theme for the 2013 Philadelphia Flower Show is Great Britain. For more details, visit www.TheFlowerShow.com. Most people come with me to see the Flower Show, but almost everyone enjoys Longwood Gardens even more. It is so peaceful and relaxing, after the bustle of downtown Philly. We will spend more time at Longwood Gardens this year, rather than trying to squeeze in a second stop. Each year we order mushrooms (lots of them), and you can do that once again in 2013.

First Day - March 6th or 9th
7:30 Depart Rochester from Bristol's Garden Center on Rt. 96 just south of the Thruway
11:15 Lunch included near Scranton, PA at The Inn at Nichols Village
3:00 Arrive Philadelphia Flower Show
9:00 Leave show for Comfort Inn/Suites in Wilmington, Delaware (same hotel we always use)
9:45 Arrive at Hotel

Second Day – March 7th or 10th
8:10 Leave for Longwood Gardens (continental breakfast at hotel)
9:00 Arrive Longwood Gardens, lunch on your own in their wonderful cafe
2:30 Leave for dinner in Scranton.
5:30 Arrive at the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel for an elegant closing dinner
10:30 Return to Rochester (Bristol's Garden Center)

The 2013 price is $395 per person (double) includes everything except dinner at the Flower Show, and also does not include lunch at Longwood (add $55 for a single). Call Michael at 585-703-9237 if you have questions. Please send full payment to reserve your place with a check payable to Michael Warren Thomas, 19 Trafalgar St, Rochester, NY 14619.

Actually, that comment was in error.  Please feel free to post any local business --- but this is not a place for notices about music events, which should be posted to the Events.

This group discussion is about local grocery stores and dining places.  Please do not post other discussions or notices here.  Thank you.
