The Arnett Branch Library has packets of Halloween poems for you to give to your trick-or-treaters. They were written as part of the Halloween Poetry Project sponsored by the Friends of Arnett. The last two years folks gave trick-or-treaters a piece of candy and a poem to put in their bags, and they loved it! It’s a fun and sneaky way to get kids to read, so stop in and ask at the desk for some poems.

Back when I worked for pay, lunch meant more than the mid-day meal. My office mates and I would wolf down our sandwiches and clear the table to play euchre. When I recall those days in the misty past, it's the noon hour card games with the accompanying trash talk and slapping down of cards that I miss the most.…

This September marks the second annual Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. Created by President Barak Obama in 2011, the purpose of the designation is to bring understanding to the country’s fast-growing health crisis. Beyond showcasing the facts that make childhood overweight and obesity so serious, this month gives parents, guardians, teachers, and community members the opportunity to take action to get kids moving more and eating better.
According to the Centers for…

I've just spoken to Emilye Crosby who lives on Weldon. She is concerned about the state of former owner occupied homes becoming rental property too. Even if your street isn't affected you are still affected. I'm asking those concerned to join me in setting aside a time to speak to city council about zoning laws and ordinance that may help us preserve home ownership. I'm not a lawyer but I don't believe this sort of thing could so easily take place in some of our suburban neighborhoods. It's…

I love the community and the people. I feel when Dr. Stroud was the Leader at school #16 he engaged the parents to get involved. I was presented with a second chance to be part of a great movement and that movement is addressing how our children cope with learning today. Today we teach from a desk room, teacher, point of view, and our children has not adjusted to this obsolete teaching method. Our children today are learning virtue online, wireless cell phone with all the web design…

Our week was very productive, we were able to accomplish our tasks. On Monday, we had a day off because we have to work on Friday for the SWAN block party. On Tuesday , we finished interviewing business owners on Genesee street. On Wednesday we went to Rochester Works, and they presented us with the correct ways to make a resume, and then we made are own resume. Today is Thursday and we painted posters and signs for the SWAN block party on tomorrow.

Maybe it's just me or maybe I'm late to the game, but I think I'm seeing a bad trend around my neck of the 19th ward. That is the turning of good single family homes into apartments. A former long time neighbor and friend in the house behind ours put her home up for sale. Gone for cash in 4 days. Guess what will happen next. This is a very nice, well maintained single family home. As the UR expands it's student population some very good single family homes around the Brooks avenue area are…

League preparations continue at a good pace. At the present we need a vice-president, secretary and treasurer. These are all temporary positions necessary for the league to re-charter. A permanent board of directors will be elected in March 2013. If enough volunteers to form a board do not come forth the league will be dissolved. But, I hope not.
If you are a parent with league age children (5 to 9) and you want your child to play…
