Gas supplier Solicitor - Caution

Be aware that a solicitor is in the neighborhood, using some questionable practices.   He appears to be licensed to solicit, (? had ID badge) but uses someone elses RGE bill with a message on it saying they will ask the customer for more money since he has not had any meter readings.  So they were going to raise his rate.  The solicitor was implying my rate could be raised, but if I switched to his company, they would save me money.  The bill is questionable in that there is no reason the…

Free Range Christmas Goose, Anyone?

My sister-in-law Roxanne raises poultry, to feed her family food she trusts and as a hobby. Last spring my husband asked if she would be willing to raise a goose for us for Christmas. Roxanne is a cautious person and knows how vulnerable small free range birds (as all of hers are) to predators, so she bought eight. As it happens, 7 of them have now lived full and happy lives. She has fed them grain as well as what they graze on their own, and they follow her all around. Roxanne says that while… Continue

Halloween Poetry Project

The Arnett Branch Library has packets of Halloween poems for you to give to your trick-or-treaters.  They were written as part of the Halloween Poetry Project sponsored by the Friends of Arnett.  Last year folks each gave each kid a piece of candy and a poem to put in their bags, and they loved it!  It is a fun and sneaky way to get kids to read, so stop in and ask at the desk for some poems.

Halloween and trick or treater engagment

Halloween is fast approaching.  We stand on our porches and hand out lots of candy.  So why not make it more fun. Much to my family's embarassment every other year or so, children who come to our house meet, not me, but the "Math Wizard".  The math wizard has a silly cape and requires each trick or treeter to answer a math problem before getting a candy. Answer but not answer correctly.  For children under 5 this entails counting fingers, for early elementary students answering simple…

19th Ward Break-ins

On Tuesday, October 4th my daughter's car was broken into in the driveway.  I was parked behind her and they tried to break into mind but couldn't get in.  They stole an iPod and some other items out of the car.  We are at 643 Post Avenue, so burglaries are still occurring in our area.

WiFi

There have been recent posts in a number of groups about WiFi.  What is that?  Suggestions to get the U of R to help fund, or to have the City help.  What is it, and what are the benefits?

City asking for your help to identify locations needing bike racks

The City of Rochester needs your help to find suitable locations for their post & loop or inverted-U bicycle racks. Most of the racks are on the City’s east side so locations on the west side of the City would be especially helpful.

To be considered for installation the location must meet the following guidelines:

1. Must be within the City Right of Way or on City property;

2. Must serve a viable business or destination;

3. Must be ample space for snow plow… Continue

Solicitors

From our new Crime Prevention Officer,  Andrew DiMaria:

   There was a complaint yesterday of a solicitor at a residents home on Roslyn St.  The resident is older and lives alone.  An unknown male claimed he was selling a supplement for home security systems.  He did have an ID but it’s unknown what it read or if it was legitimate.  He was not let in the home.  He apparently did not go to any other homes either.  The resident in general did not feel…
