Good people in the 19th Ward

It's a very cold and snowy day here in the city and i decided to run some errands. While driving down Genesee Park Blvd I came across a man who was sitting on the corner of Lehigh with a bicycle laying next to him. A car had stopped but he waved them on. I slowed down to see if he got up and it seemed that he wasn't able to so I turned around stopped and talked with him. As I approached him he tried to get up but fell again. I offered to help him get up and then realized that he was…

Neighborhood Consortium for Youth Justice 11/19

I've added the Neighborhood Consortium for Youth Justice meeting to the Location19 calendar. This group is made up of individuals and agency representatives focused on youth who are disconnected from our community. Typical youth of concern are those on probation, struggling in school (poor attendance, drop outs), some are in detention centers and soon to be… Continue

Car Chase in PLEX Neighborhood

Some of you may have noticed some intensive police activity in the neighborhood last night. I e-mailed Kris Runyon, the southwest's principal Crime Prevention Officer, about it, and here's what she told me:

Plain clothes officers spotted a vehicle that had been stolen in a gun point robbery earlier that day. They called out on the radio with it and planned to just…

Attempted car jacking on Elmdorf and Woodbine

"About 6 yesterday afternoon 11/7/10. An elderly neighbor getting out of her car and walking to a party on Elmdorf was intercepted by two men. One in front and one behind. They took her keys from her (not her purse). They attempted to start her car, but the alarm went off. They then fled on foot. Police response was quick but the dogs lost the trail. It would seem that…

Congratulations to Mayor Duffy!

Congratulations on the Cuomo/Duffy win in the elections! Was there any question who the best candidates were? No!

Let's hope Lt. Gov.-elect Duffy can fulfill promises to help upstate NY and Rochester rebuild and reach some of its potential. I look forward to seeing him work to do more for Rochester in his new position than he could as Mayor, as has been said. It was heartening to hear Cuomo reiterate this thought tonight after the election. We can only…

Chili Ave Car Crash

I'm sure that some of you have seen the news of the horrific crash on Chili Ave last night..... I was one of the primary witnesses to the event as it occurred right in front of me (40 or so feet) when i was driving home from being away for a few days. I have seen a lot of horrible things in my life- this crash was the most violent i have ever witnessed. the car was in flames within seconds of impact and there was nothing that i could do to help possible occupants except call 911 and then direct… Continue

Porch Lights At Night

If you are willing, please turn on your porch lights at night. One resident on Enterprise, and I am sure there may be more, leaves the house to go to work at 11:30 PM. Many times I am just getting home from work then. There are only three street lights on our street area, and it is quite dark, so this would help. It is also known that lighting helps prevent crime, so a good thing for you as well. This was a direct request about lighting from a neighbor, so see if you can help. With Daylight…

Neighborhood event

Hi folks, thanks to all of you who attended St. Stephen's New Orleans Jazz Dinner. It was a fun event with lots of great food, amazing music and neighborhood bonding. In addition to neighbors, it was attended by folks who came in from Buffalo, Brighton & Clifton Springs! This annual celebration of music and food supports the urban ministries of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church including St. Stephen's Sunday Suppers (free community meals) and the weekly Tuesday night Mindful Meditation… Continue
