Song Release Party

Our 8 year old son is having a song release party for a song he wrote with a

local band over the past year as a fundraising effort to help build schools in

South Sudan.

Please come out and support if you can. Although the event isn't being held in

the ward, we live in the ward and so does the band that co-wrote the song with

Josiah.

Summer Reading at the Arnett Library

Summer reading has started at the Arnett Library.  We have programs for children, teens and adults.  Yes, adults can now do summer reading as well.  All you have to do is read a book.  Once you've read a book, stop in the library and fill out a raffle ticket.  Each ticket has a place for name, phone number, title and author of the book you've read and a little review.  There is a raffle box at the circulation desk.  At the beginning of August we will pick four winners.

There…

TEDxRochester 2011

For those not familiar with TED, it's an annual conference held in California each year since 1984.  Speakers are challenged to give the talk of their lives about their passion, but with a catch: they have to do it in 18 minutes or less. Originally setup to bring together people from the worlds of technology, education and design its scope has grown significantly.  Now, attendees will hear talks from Bill Gates about what the Bill &…

Thurston Rd. Street Fair

The Treasure Tour event held by the Thurston-Brooks Merchants group and co-sponsored by the 19th Ward Community Association, with help from the CDC, was a great positive step forward in bringing some life back into the area.  Of course, the weather did not hurt!  This is the kind of collaboration the neighborhood needs.  It was a first effort, but if repeated every year, people will look for it and more will participate.  What a great kick-off!

It was also perfect timing to introduce…

Lights on at Night Prevent Crime

Here's a note I ran by Crime Prevention Officer Kristin R., who urged me to post it, after I sent it to my block club members, E2, for Enterprise and Ellicott Streets.

Neighbors,

As a block club, we have been trying to keep porch lights on at night to help deter crime.  Lighting is a big help in…

Rochester Redux in Spoken Word Performance.

Attended my first "open mic" event at a local coffee house, called Tuvalu, in magnificent "downtown" Verona, WI (downtown is about 4 blocks square & much of THAT is residential) last night. Read some of my poems - old stuff for Rochester crowds but totally fresh and new here.

Much of the event involved some pretty bad singers & guitar players, but this is "down home" open mic and everyone is supportive…
