Neighbor needs handyman work

I have a neighbor who has been unemployed for a very long time despite all his efforts to find a job.

His preference is for gardening, outdoor maintenance, indoor handyman work, although he has also been employed in hotel kitchen work.

He’s a really good guy. I haven’t had him do any work for me because my landlord takes care of all that stuff, but I can vouch for his character.

If he doesn’t get some income…

A message from Shawn

Hey Location19er's! I just wanted to give you all an update as to what and where Anthony and I are up to. Many of you may remember that Anthony was not feeling well as we were planning our move out to Seattle in June. Well about 2 weeks before we were to drive across country he took a turn for the worse. We ended up moving to Binghamton NY where we have been staying with family for the last month and a half.

Anthony is doing better, due to medication, but is still in pain, and can not… Continue

Dear Concerned Citizen:

Goodbye party for Shawn and Anthony

Shawn, when are you leaving, exactly? We want to have a goodbye party for you?

Other's who are interested in helping please contact me. Mark suggested GV Park, that would be great, but I think the weather is still too iffy. I can offer my house/patio, though others may offer too. My space is medium.... I was thinking a dish to pass event and lots of appreciations for the master of the Loc 19. Feel free to call me too. 546 1469

Warm regards to all

A Message from Shawn about Location19

Dear Location19 members,

I have been worrying about how to tell you all this for sometime, and as many of you have noticed, Anthony and I

have listed our house for sale. I will be graduating at the end of May,

and for employment and educational reasons, we have decided that we

will be relocating to Seattle, WA this summer.

This was a hard decision to make, and we have been debating the idea since I started

school in 2006. But as you may know, the economy… Continue

New at Bluerosesphotography.com

Calling attention to my photography website, where people can view and purchase the best of my photography:

http://bluerosesphotography.com

I have posted six new images in the Floral gallery - all of them taken from a brief walk at Highland Park, near the reservoir.

The name "Blueroses" is taken from Tennessee Williams' "The Glass Menagerie." "Blue Roses" is the nickname that protagonist Jim Wingfield gave to his… Continue

Coincidence on Book Review in TIME

With talk around the Ward of block clubs, corner cookouts, and neighborhood problems, I was amazed to read this review today in the current issue of TIME magazine. (CAPS are mine for emphasis.)

"In the Neighborhood: The Search for Community on an American Street, One Sleepover at a Time.

What would you say if your 50-year-old neighbor asked to spend the night at your house? You might be inclined to call the police. You'd almost certainly think he was a…

My Deprived Childhood

Thinking about all the things I didn't have when I was a child...

I didn’t have friends or siblings or parents who got shot or stabbed to death.

I didn’t have parents who beat me or any of my siblings, of which I had four.

I didn’t have parents who were drug addicts or alcoholics. In fact, I never saw them drink any alcohol. Ever.

I didn’t have parents in jail.

I didn’t have a father who beat my mother, or vice versa.

I didn’t… Continue

Disrespect in the Ward

In the past few days there has been a lively discussion in the 19thWCA yahoo group regarding the problems we have with neighborhood kids who persist in being disrespectful towards us, to the point of making life in the Ward extremely unpleasant.

Unfortunately the discussion itself has become extremely unpleasant, particularly for me. I have no intention of adding to a flame war as that serves no useful purpose and directs problem-solving energies into pointless anger.

But… Continue

Volunteer Opportunity - Thurston/Ravenwood Pocket Park

Hello Fellow 19th Warders!
For the past few years I have been responsible for the maintenance of the small pocket park at the corner of Thurston Road and Ravenwood

Avenue. I suffered a stroke at the end of February so my situation has changed and I can no longer physically handle

the tasks. Though my

situation could be much more dire, for now I do not know my abilities

for the summer of 2010.

Since 2001 much volunteer energy and time has been…

Easter on Marlborough Road

About 4 years ago, the Marlborough Road Neighbors group came up with the idea of planting some type of flowering tree on the tree lawns - after some discussion we realized that was a bit ambitious but decided that planting something would be time well spent. Sheri Tehan and others organized this and over the past 3 Fall seasons have planted daffodil bulbs with the hopes that they would survive the winter and bloom in the Spring. Some neighbors have added additional bulbs along the… Continue

Spring Hot Dog Corner Cookout

We had great success last year with Corner Cookouts, and I would like to see them continue in the coming season. We are in planning stage to have at least three in the 19th Ward. The first one will be in the City- owned lot at the corner of Thurston across from Thurston Garage, at Thurston and Midvale.

These are a neighborhood reach-out to show that people who live here care, and want to…

What's new on Thurston!

Driving down Thurston this evening was yet another disappointing experience. It is again/still filled with litter. THe 'clubs' were hopping with illegally parked cars. LOTS of people just hanging out.... I noticed yet another 'corner store'. But, the highlight of what's new on Thurston is a CASKET STORE!

I don't believe that i have ever seen a casket store before - and I find it strangely…

Snow, snow, snow - quick poll

Marlborough Road has a LOT of snow/slush still in the road and we've also had a LOT of residential plows clear driveways and leave snow in the road and/or in front of other driveways.
Any other streets having similar problems??
